Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has discussed the signed Memorandum of Understanding between US and Iran with leaders in the region.
The agreement includes Iran reaffirming a commitment to not develop a nuclear weapon, an end to the war on all fronts and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The war began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, though a temporary ceasefire suspended much of the most intense fighting on April 8.
This agreement extends the ceasefire for 60 days, paving the way for further negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme, US sanctions on Tehran and the release of frozen assets.
Qatar’s Al Thani spoke by phone with Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud with the US-Iran agreement the central topic of discussion. Doha’s Foreign Ministry disclosed that the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and regional developments following the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran.
Both energy-rich Gulf countries have pushed for a deal for months between Iran and the US to halt hostilities as attacks have roiled the region and shut down oil and gas exports crucial to their economies.
Also, the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister spoke by phone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty with the US-Iran deal topping the agenda. Doha’s Foreign Ministry said that the call covered bilateral relations and the latest developments on the agreement reached between Washington and Tehran.
It said that Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Doha’s support for efforts to reach “sustainable solutions to outstanding issues through dialogue and peaceful means in line with the principles of international law.”
Qatar welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, describing it as confirmation of their willingness to resolve differences through negotiation.
According to its Foreign Ministry, the deal, which covers the cessation of hostilities and ensures freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, represents “a solid foundation for advancing to the next stage of negotiations.”
It called on all parties to “maintain the positive spirit, constructive endeavors, and joint coordination to ensure comprehensive and sustainable outcomes.”
Qatar also praised Pakistan’s role in brokering the agreement. The statement comes as the two sides prepare for talks at Burgenstock in Switzerland tomorrow, with Qatar among the mediating parties expected to attend.
Separately, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, discussed the US-Iran deal by phone. “Fidan congratulated Pakistan on the historic signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran and endorsed by Pakistan as the mediator,” a statement from Dar’s office said.
It added that both leaders expressed hope that this significant development would contribute to lasting peace, stability, and progress in the region and beyond.
Iran Calls Deal A Result Of National Resilience
Meanwhile, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the memorandum of understanding agreed on by Washington and Tehran “reflects the voice of a nation that did not trade its dignity and independence for any threat or pressure.”
In a post on X he shared the signed agreement, saying, “What was recorded today was the result of national resilience, political rationality, and responsible diplomacy.”
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the signing of the agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict. “May this Memorandum of Understanding serve as an enduring foundation for greater understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the complete region,” he added.
