Former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the government to consider declaring a state of emergency following the devastating floods that swept through parts of Greater Accra, warning that forecasts of more rainfall demand an urgent and coordinated national response.
Dr. Bawumia made the call after visiting several flood affected communities, including Adenta, where he assessed the destruction caused by Monday’s heavy rains and interacted with residents whose homes and livelihoods were severely impacted.
Describing the disaster as a national tragedy, he appealed to Ghanaians to put aside political differences and work together to address the recurring flooding that continues to threaten lives and property in the capital.
“This is a tragedy, and it is a tragedy for all of Ghana. It is not a tragedy only for Accra. It is a tragedy for all of Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia said. He noted that the floods had caused widespread destruction and loss of life, leaving many families displaced and communities struggling to recover.

Calls for Immediate Recovery of Flood Victim
During his visit to one of the affected communities, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that he had been informed that the body of a flood victim was yet to be retrieved despite the passage of time since the disaster struck.
“I want to call on the authorities, particularly NADMO and the Ghana Police Service, to work together to ensure that the body is removed immediately. It is difficult to understand why this has not been done since yesterday.”

He stressed that recovering victims and supporting affected families should remain a top priority as emergency agencies continue rescue and relief operations across flood hit communities.
Appeal for Unity Over Politics
Dr. Bawumia urged political parties and the public to resist turning the disaster into a partisan debate, insisting that the focus should remain on finding practical solutions to Accra’s perennial flooding problem.
“The Greater Accra Region faces a real and serious flooding problem that requires immediate and urgent solutions. That is where our attention should be. We should focus on solving the problem instead of engaging in blame games.”

His comments come as emergency agencies continue responding to one of the most destructive flooding incidents to hit the capital in recent years.

State of Emergency Proposal
The former Vice President said forecasts indicating more rainfall in the coming days should prompt the government to adopt stronger emergency measures to protect lives and property.
He argued that a state of emergency would enable authorities to mobilise resources more effectively and respond to the unfolding crisis with greater urgency.
Dr. Bawumia also called for a coordinated national effort involving professionals from different disciplines to tackle the long standing challenge of flooding.
“This is a major national challenge, and we must bring together all our expertise and capabilities. We need engineers, hydrologists, disaster management experts, and every available resource, regardless of political affiliation.”

He stressed that solving the flooding problem should become a national objective that transcends political interests. “This is about Ghana. Let us unite as one people and work together to solve this problem for our country,” he remarked.

Flood Victims Need Immediate Support
Beyond calls for long term solutions, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the urgent humanitarian needs facing thousands of flood victims who have lost homes and personal belongings.
He appealed to individuals, businesses, religious organisations, and civil society groups to support ongoing relief efforts by providing essential supplies. The former Vice President also pledged to contribute personally to the relief effort.
“For my part, I will do what I can to assist with relief items. Our country, our communities, and our people are in need, and each of us should contribute in whatever way possible to help those who have been affected.”

National Challenge Requires Collective Action
Dr. Bawumia concluded by reiterating that the floods should serve as a reminder of the urgent need for Ghana to develop lasting solutions to the persistent flooding that affects parts of Greater Accra during heavy rains.

He maintained that the immediate priority should be saving lives, supporting displaced families, and ensuring that all available expertise is brought together to address the crisis before additional rainfall worsens the situation.
“This is indeed a very sad situation,” he said. His visit comes as emergency response agencies continue search and rescue operations in affected communities while the government assesses the full extent of the damage caused by Monday’s floods.
