Celebrations for United States’ independence anniversary got underway today, Saturday, July 4, 2026, throughout the country.
The signing of the Declaration of Independence, one of history’s most celebrated articulations of democratic ambitions, is being marked in many ways.
Fireworks are scheduled to be set off over Navy Pier in Chicago and against the skyline of New York City. New York hosted a ball drop at midnight to usher in the holiday with the same fanfare as New Year’s Eve and saw tall ships parade pass the Statue of Liberty, recalling the fanfare around America’s 200th anniversary in 1976.
In Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in Independence Hall 250 years ago, there will be a celebration concert featuring stars including Christina Aguilera and Meek Mill.
The 250th independence anniversary takes place as a sweltering heatwave grips swathes of the eastern and central US.
The intense heat has already led to events being cancelled. On Friday, organisers of the National Park Service’s Independence Day Parade in Washington DC said that they had cancelled the annual event over safety concerns. Some celebration events have also been cancelled from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland to as far west as Colorado.
An extreme heat warning was issued for the District of Columbia, where heat index values could approach 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 C). Triple-degree heat was forecast in the east from the South to New England, though the heat could ease somewhat with strong thunderstorms later.
At the International Naval Review in New York city, US Vice President JD Vance delivered a pointed message amid Independence Day celebrations. Vance called on Americans to reject criticism of the US, saying some people “speak obsessively, not of our national greatness, but of our national imperfections.”

Foreign leaders sent celebratory wishes and pledged enduring support to the United States today as the nation marks its 250th anniversary of independence.
President of the European Council António Costa said in a post on X, “Congratulations to our friends and partners in the United States of America on the 250th anniversary of your independence.”
United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan wrote in a post on X, “I extend my sincere congratulations to US President Donald Trump and the American people on the 250th anniversary of national independence.” Messages of well-wishes and congratulations also came in from other US allies in the region, including Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
In a letter released during his visit to the southern Italian island Lampedusa, Pope Leo XIV marked the Fourth of July with an appeal for “compassion and generosity.” The Pope said that protecting human life meant “welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants,” whose “hopes, sacrifices and contribution” formed part of the history of the United States.
Trump To Give Address At National Mall
US President, Donald Trump will head to Washington DC’s National Mall for what he has billed as a “spectacular rally” celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
The event, will include flyovers by hundreds of aircraft and a fireworks display organisers hope will be the biggest of all time. Military flyovers over Washington DC will happen every hour between 13:15 local time (17:15 GMT) and sunset, the organisers said, and Trump’s new Air Force One will feature in one of the formations over the capital.

The Washington DC event, formally known as the Salute to America 250 Celebrations & Fireworks, is due to begin with Trump expected to speak a few hours later. He has promised to make a “really long speech” at the Fourth of July festivities, despite the heatwave, “to show that I can do anything.”
President Trump used a speech on the eve of Independence Day to claim that American identity is under threat from what he called domestic “radicals” and “extremists.” Trump spoke of communism as a “mortal threat to American liberty” with the Republican President saying that it was more dangerous than either World War or 9/11.
Speaking at the Mount Rushmore national monument in South Dakota on Friday, the US President warned of a resurgence of what he called “the communist menace” and “newcomers” who embraced ideas opposed to the American way of life.
The Fourth of July fireworks display is an annual tradition in Washington DC and Trump has promised that this year’s version, which is scheduled to begin after his remarks, would be the “largest fireworks show in history.”
Approximately 850,000 fireworks will be launched from 10 sites across the city, including eight barges on the Potomac River, according to the event’s organisers. It is expected to last for 40 minutes – twice as long as the usual display, which features about 20,000 fireworks.
It is aiming to secure the the Guinness World Record for the largest official fireworks show ever, surpassing the current record set in 2016 by a megachurch in the Philippines. There are concerns, however, that the display could cause dangerous levels of air pollution in the city.
