Veteran forward Khris Middleton is heading back to the Washington Wizards after agreeing to a three-year, $17.6 million contract in a sign-and-trade deal that formed part of one of the most complex transactions in NBA history.

The agreement, confirmed on Tuesday, involves six franchises: the Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers.

The blockbuster deal combines several previously negotiated trades into a single transaction under the NBA’s salary cap framework.

Middleton returns to Washington after spending part of the previous two seasons with the franchise before a mid-season move to Dallas. The Wizards viewed the 34-year-old as an experienced leader capable of mentoring a developing roster while still contributing on the court.

The three-time NBA All-Star averaged 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 63 appearances last season. While his production has declined from his peak years in Milwaukee, league executives continue to value his playoff pedigree, leadership and versatility on both ends of the floor.

Six-Team Deal Reshapes Multiple Rosters

The multi-team agreement triggered significant movement across the league.

As part of the transaction, Washington sends D’Angelo Russell and multiple future second-round draft assets to Memphis, while Dallas includes an additional second-round selection in Middleton’s move back to the Wizards.

The Grizzlies, meanwhile, receive several draft picks and players as they continue reshaping their roster for the future.

The deal also sees veteran guard Caris LeVert move from Detroit to Milwaukee, with the Pistons receiving Taurean Prince and Gary Harris.

Detroit additionally creates a valuable trade exception and improves its salary cap flexibility, while several draft selections are redistributed among the participating teams.

Other previously agreed transactions were folded into the framework, including moves involving John Collins, Isaiah Stewart, Santi Aldama and several future draft picks. The scale and complexity of the agreement make it one of the largest multi-team trades completed in recent NBA history.

Veteran Experience Returns to Washington

Middleton’s return provides Washington with one of the league’s most accomplished veterans. Since entering the NBA in 2012, he has built a reputation as a dependable two-way forward and one of the game’s most effective postseason performers.

His most successful spell came with Milwaukee, where he spent 12 seasons and formed a championship-winning partnership with Giannis Antetokounmpo. Together they led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA title, with Middleton playing a pivotal role throughout the playoff run.

Across his career, he has earned three All-Star selections while establishing himself as one of the league’s most reliable perimeter scorers.

Middleton’s playoff résumé remains among the strongest of any active veteran. In 80 postseason games, he has averaged 20.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists, numbers that exceed his regular-season career averages and underline his reputation for elevating his performances when the stakes are highest.

Wizards Continue Offseason Rebuild

Washington’s front office has made veteran leadership a priority during free agency as it seeks to accelerate the development of its young core while improving the team’s competitiveness.

Middleton’s arrival gives the Wizards another experienced presence capable of guiding younger teammates on and off the court. His familiarity with the organisation is also expected to ease his transition back into the locker room after a brief spell away.

For Dallas, the move creates additional roster flexibility as the Mavericks continue reshaping their squad following a busy offseason.

Memphis, Detroit, Milwaukee and the Clippers also address different roster needs through the expansive agreement, illustrating how increasingly creative front offices have become under the NBA’s collective bargaining rules.

Although blockbuster trades are nothing new in the NBA, six-team transactions remain exceptionally rare. This latest deal not only returns Middleton to familiar surroundings but also highlights the intricate financial planning and collaboration now required to complete major moves in today’s salary cap era.
