As the countdown hits six days, Ghana’s capital is preparing to transform into a vibrant living laboratory where creativity meets healing.
The inaugural Accra Arts and Health Festival, scheduled for July 20–26, 2026, promises to be the country’s first major city-wide celebration dedicated to the powerful connection between arts, culture, and public wellbeing.
Organizers describe the week-long event as more than a series of performances and exhibitions. It is positioned as a transformative movement that leverages Ghana’s rich cultural heritage from traditional drumming and storytelling to contemporary visual arts and dance as evidence-informed tools for mental health support, community resilience, and social cohesion.
“Art isn’t just therapy,” says a festival statement. “From drumming circles in community squares to public art installations across the city, we are exploring how creativity can support mental, emotional, and collective wellbeing in tangible ways.”
The festival will activate dozens of venues throughout Accra, including markets, cultural institutions, parks, and community spaces. More than 100 curated workshops, performances, installations, wellness activations, film screenings, and dialogues are planned.
Over 200 artists, facilitators, healthcare professionals, and cultural practitioners are expected to participate, with projections of engaging more than 15,000 participants during the week.

About the Program
The program draws inspiration from Global South Arts and Health Initiatives and features partnerships with institutions such as Knutsford University, the British Council, GSAH (Global South Arts & Health), and Global Arts.
Bishop John Kwamena Essel, identified as Chief Host and Founder/Pro-Chancellor of Knutsford University, is among the prominent figures backing the initiative. The festival also enjoys support from various local health, education, and cultural organizations including the National Association of Health Students (NAHSAG), Impact Africa Alliance, and autism advocacy groups.
Registration and participation are completely free, a deliberate choice aimed at maximizing accessibility and ensuring broad community involvement, particularly among young people, healthcare workers, artists, and underserved populations.
Festival coordinators emphasize the timeliness of the event. In a rapidly urbanizing Ghana facing rising mental health challenges, non-communicable diseases, and post-pandemic recovery needs, the arts are being positioned not as luxury but as essential public health infrastructure.
“By bridging Ghanaian heritage with innovative creative health practices, we are creating spaces where culture becomes medicine,” one organizer noted. Sessions will explore topics ranging from music therapy and movement-based healing to storytelling for trauma recovery and the role of public art in fostering social dialogue.
The festival also includes an academic symposium and international exchange components, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share evidence and best practices from across Africa and beyond. This knowledge-sharing element aims to strengthen Ghana’s emerging arts-in-health sector and position Accra as a regional hub for creative wellness innovation.
