The Ghana Health Service has publicly honoured Madam Rose Nyamekye, a community health volunteer in the Sene West District of the Bono East Region, whose more than three decades of unpaid service have made her a fixture in the district’s public health story.

Known affectionately as Mama Rose, she has worked alongside the Ghana Health Service since 1992, taking part in some of the country’s most significant public health interventions and helping carry essential services into communities that would otherwise struggle to access them.

Over the course of her service, Mama Rose has participated in a wide range of national health programmes, including Mass Drug Administration campaigns against Onchocerciasis and Guinea Worm, National Immunisation Days targeting polio, Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention exercises, and the distribution of insecticide-treated nets, among several other interventions.

Her involvement across such a broad span of campaigns reflects a career that has tracked closely with the evolution of Ghana’s public health priorities over more than 30 years.

Her Reach Extends Across Multiple Communities in Sene West

The Ghana Health Service noted that Mama Rose’s work has taken her to communities including Lassi, Battor, Asempa Na Ɛyɛ, Kukujato, Kukubaakpa, Dawa, Kukusi Kwasi and Krusakrusa, where she has helped bring health services closer to residents who might otherwise face long journeys to reach a facility.

Her presence in these areas has made her one of the most recognisable links between formal health institutions and the communities they aim to serve.

In its tribute, the Ghana Health Service situated Mama Rose’s story within a much larger network of community health volunteers operating across the country, describing them as people who quietly give their time, energy and experience to improve the health of their neighbours without expecting recognition in return.

“They are the familiar faces who bridge the gap between health facilities and the communities they serve, often without expecting recognition.”

That framing places Mama Rose’s individual story alongside the thousands of similar volunteers whose contributions rarely make headlines, yet who remain central to how public health campaigns reach rural and underserved communities across Ghana.

Tribute Marks Her Legacy in Sene West District

Marking the recognition, the Ghana Health Service extended its thanks directly to Mama Rose for more than three decades of service to the people of Sene West, describing her as a reminder that lasting change is often built by ordinary people who choose, day after day, to serve others.

The tribute comes at a time when community-level health volunteers continue to play an outsized role in delivering national interventions in areas where health infrastructure remains thin.

Programmes such as Mass Drug Administration, National Immunisation Days, and Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention rely heavily on volunteers to mobilise communities, distribute medication and nets, and follow up with residents who might otherwise be missed by formal outreach systems.

Mama Rose’s three-decade record across several of these campaigns illustrates how deeply embedded volunteer networks have become in the country’s public health architecture.

A Model for Recognising Unsung Contributors to Public Health

By publicly celebrating her contribution, the Ghana Health Service is also signalling the value it places on recognising volunteers whose work often goes undocumented beyond the communities they serve.

For Sene West District, Mama Rose’s decades of service stand as a record of consistency that has spanned multiple generations of national health campaigns, from the fight against Guinea Worm disease to ongoing efforts around malaria prevention and immunisation.

As Ghana continues to lean on community volunteers to extend the reach of its health system, tributes like this one offer a rare moment of visibility for individuals whose contributions are often felt locally but seldom acknowledged nationally, underscoring the extent to which Ghana’s public health successes rest on the sustained commitment of volunteers working far from the spotlight.
