The Deputy Director of IT and Elections for the NDC, Rashid Tanko Computer, has criticised the decision by the NPP to organise a demonstration on August 6, a day set aside for the first anniversary commemoration of the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians. Mr Tanko argued that the timing of the planned protest is inappropriate, stressing that the date carries national significance because of the loss suffered by the country.
The Deputy Director explained that the state has lined up activities to honour the memory of the fallen officers and public officials who died in the crash.
According to him, the decision to hold a demonstration on the same day shows a lack of sensitivity towards the national remembrance activities.
He recalled that August 6, 2025, has become a painful moment for many Ghanaians following the helicopter crash that killed senior government officials and military personnel. The NDC official noted that the country united in mourning at the time and believed the anniversary requires a similar atmosphere of respect.

Referencing the involvement of Janet in the planned demonstration, Mr Tanko questioned the decision to participate in an event scheduled for the same day as the commemoration.
He indicated that cultural values around remembering departed relatives and national heroes require citizens to approach such occasions with caution and respect.
The NDC executive further argued that political activities could have been scheduled on another date without conflicting with the national tribute planned for the fallen officers. From his perspective, the choice of date creates unnecessary tension at a time when the country is expected to unite in remembrance.
The Deputy Director also rejected claims that the protest represents the only avenue available for citizens to express their views on national issues. He noted that Ghana’s democratic environment provides several platforms for public engagement and political participation.
On this matter, Mr Tanko referenced the contributions of the security services and public officials who continue to serve the country under difficult circumstances. He encouraged politicians to consider the significance of national events when organising activities that attract public attention.
Turning to the involvement of opposition figures, he acknowledged that citizens have constitutional rights to participate in political activities. However, he stressed that those rights come with a responsibility to recognise moments of national importance.
The NDC representative emphasised that the commemoration of the fallen officers should remain a period for reflection and appreciation of their service. He urged political groups to consider the feelings of families and communities affected by the tragedy when planning public events.
Public Speech And Political Conduct Dominate Protest Debate
Addressing issues surrounding public statements and political discussions, Rashid Tanko Computer also criticised the comments made by some individuals during political engagements. The NDC Deputy Director argued that freedom of expression must operate within the limits of the law and respect for public safety.
Mr Tanko referenced Janet’s media appearances and questioned whether her public comments have resulted in any restriction on her ability to participate in national conversations. He noted that democratic freedoms allow criticism of government policies while rejecting statements that threaten individuals or public order.
The Deputy Director explained that politicians and citizens must recognise the difference between policy criticism and statements that could create fear within society. He urged public figures to use their influence carefully, especially when addressing sensitive national matters.
He also mentioned lawyer Nana B as an example of someone who engages in public discussions through established channels. According to Mr Tanko, disagreements over governance should remain focused on issues and avoid personal attacks or language that could encourage hostility.

Furthermore, the NDC official challenged claims that democracy is under threat because of actions taken by state institutions against some individuals. He referenced previous political developments and argued that national conversations should examine all sides of democratic practice.
Referencing the role of security agencies, Mr Tanko stated that institutions have a duty to respond when public statements create potential threats. He explained that maintaining peace requires cooperation between citizens, political leaders and state authorities.
The Deputy Director also raised questions about the organisation of political demonstrations and the methods used to attract participants. He alleged that some individuals are being offered financial incentives to join protests and urged citizens to examine the motives behind political mobilisation.
Discussing the planned NPP demonstration, Mr Tanko referred to previous incidents involving political gatherings and called for greater transparency in organising such events. He stressed that public demonstrations should be driven by genuine civic participation and national interest.
Additionally, he highlighted the influence of social media platforms in shaping political conversations among young people. The NDC executive encouraged users of digital platforms to consider the impact of their statements before publishing content online.
Mr Tanko also addressed the responsibility of families and communities in influencing respectful communication among citizens. He appealed to politicians to promote values that encourage dialogue and peaceful engagement.
