Walt Disney and Tiktok

The Walt Disney Company and TikTok announced a groundbreaking partnership on Wednesday that will allow select fan-made short-form videos to appear on Disney+, marking the first time official TikTok content will stream on another major platform.

Under the agreement, TikTok creators who opt into the program will receive access to assets from Disney’s extensive library of movies and television shows. These assets include memorable scenes, characters, and moments from major franchises such as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, FX, and other Disney properties.

Creators can then incorporate the material into their vertical videos, which will appear both on TikTok and in the Verts section of the Disney+ app.

Verts, Disney+’s short-form vertical video feed, launched earlier this year as the streamer sought to attract younger audiences who prefer swipeable, phone-friendly content. The new partnership aims to expand the variety and volume of material available in that feed by adding thoughtfully curated fan-created videos.

Content will be refreshed regularly to keep pace with timely conversations among fans and to encourage deeper engagement with Disney’s broader catalog of full-length movies and series.

The collaboration will begin as a pilot program in the United States in the coming months, with plans to expand to additional markets later. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Participating creators’ videos that meet Disney’s standards will live on both platforms, giving fan edits a formal home on the subscription streaming service while remaining available on TikTok.

Central to the initiative is the jointly run Disney Creator Ambassador Program. Through it, selected creators can unlock special rewards, gain increased visibility, attend exclusive events, and access career development opportunities.
Disney and TikTok framed the program as a way to nurture emerging talent and recognize that the next generation of storytellers often begins on social media platforms.

“The best storytellers are fans first,” said Asad Ayaz, chief marketing and brand officer at The Walt Disney Company. “That has always been true at Disney, and today, fans are celebrating our stories in entirely new ways. This collaboration creates a new bridge between the stories we tell and the creativity they inspire, giving creators a bigger stage to share what they’ve made, and audiences more to discover on Disney+ every day.”

Dawn Yang, TikTok’s global head of entertainment, echoed the sentiment. “Creators are at the heart of everything we do at TikTok. Their creativity extends the life of films and shows into conversations that fans discover and share. Together with Disney, we’re bringing the authentic creator expression of the TikTok community to Disney+, inviting audiences to experience the shared creativity that makes fandom so powerful.”

The deal addresses a long-standing tension in the entertainment industry. Fans have long used clips from movies and TV shows in their videos, but without permission those posts frequently faced copyright claims and removal.

Official access is expected to reduce those barriers and allow wider distribution of Disney-related fan content. TikTok reported that its platform saw an average of 6.5 million posts related to film and television each day last year.

Nearly half of viewers in one survey said they watched a movie or TV show after discovering related content on the app.

For Disney, the partnership forms part of a broader push into short-form video. Company executives have described short-form content as an area they are actively developing, particularly as they work to engage younger subscribers who spend significant time on mobile platforms. Disney+ launched Verts to capture some of that attention by offering quick clips and highlights that can lead viewers into full titles.

Adding curated fan videos expands that strategy while giving Disney greater control over how its intellectual property appears in the short-form space.

The announcement comes after Disney’s earlier plans for a similar arrangement with OpenAI involving AI-generated video content using its characters. That deal collapsed when OpenAI discontinued its Sora video tool.

The TikTok partnership focuses instead on human creators and authentic fan expression rather than artificial intelligence.

Public Reaction

Analysts and industry observers noted that the move also reflects the growing influence of social media on traditional entertainment companies. Streaming services including Tubi and Peacock have previously worked with TikTok creators on longer-form projects.

Disney’s approach stands out by bringing existing fan videos directly into its own app and by offering official library access at scale.

The timing coincides with Disney’s recent quarterly results, in which subscription video-on-demand operating income more than doubled year over year. The company continues to emphasize engagement and retention as key priorities for its streaming business.

Creators interested in participating will need to opt into the program. Disney has emphasized that only thoughtfully curated content will appear on Disney+, ensuring material aligns with the company’s family-friendly brand standards.

Specific details about how creators will be selected or which exact assets will be available first have not yet been released.

Industry reaction mixed excitement over official access with some skepticism about quality control and the value proposition for paying subscribers. Some online comments questioned whether Disney+ users would want to watch the same short videos already freely available on their phones.

Others saw potential for the partnership to surface talented creators and extend the cultural life of Disney franchises in new formats.

As the pilot rolls out in the United States, both companies will monitor engagement metrics, creator participation, and audience response before expanding internationally. If successful, the model could influence how other media companies approach fan content and short-form video in the years ahead.

The partnership underscores a shift in how major entertainment brands view user-generated material. Rather than treating fan edits primarily as a copyright risk, Disney and TikTok are positioning them as a valuable extension of storytelling that can deepen audience connection and introduce new viewers to classic and current titles alike.
