Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has declared his side ready to compete for every major honour as the Catalan giants prepare to begin their La Liga title defence with expectations once again at their highest.
Flick delivered an upbeat assessment of his squad ahead of Wednesday’s Festa del Gamper Estrella Damm against Egyptian giants Al Ahly at the Spotify Camp Nou, describing Barcelona as a “fantastic team” capable of challenging on all fronts. The friendly will provide another important opportunity for the German coach to assess his players before the competitive campaign begins.
Barcelona’s preparation has not been straightforward, however. Flick revealed that eight players only returned to training a week ago, forcing the coaching staff to adapt their preparations. Despite the disruption, he said he was pleased with what he had seen on the training ground, suggesting the squad is rapidly moving towards the level required for another demanding campaign.
The Gamper will also give Barcelona their first opportunity of the season to play in front of their supporters at the Spotify Camp Nou. Flick believes the connection between the team and its supporters could again prove decisive, recalling how Barcelona’s strong home form played a crucial role in their success last season.
“Last season we won every home match, and that was crucial in winning La Liga,” Flick said, stressing that the support of the Barcelona faithful will be required again throughout the campaign.
His message is clear: defending the title will require more than individual quality. It will demand consistency, intensity and a strong relationship between the team and its supporters.
Flick Demands Another Level Of Consistency
Barcelona’s route to a third consecutive La Liga title will officially begin on Sunday, August 23, when Flick’s side travel to the Martínez Valero to face Elche at 9:30pm CEST.

Although the fixture is listed as Matchday 2, it will be Barcelona’s opening league game because their Matchday 1 meeting with Athletic Club was postponed due to the delayed return of several players following the World Cup.
The opening away fixture will immediately test whether Barcelona can translate Flick’s confidence into competitive results. There will be little room for complacency for a side expected to challenge for the title, particularly with rivals eager to prevent Barcelona from establishing another period of domestic dominance.
Barcelona will then make their competitive return to the Spotify Camp Nou on Thursday, August 27, against Athletic Club at 9pm CEST. They face another quick turnaround four days later when Rayo Vallecano visit Barcelona on August 31.
The congested opening schedule makes Flick’s comments about squad readiness particularly significant. Barcelona cannot afford a slow start, and the German will need to manage a group that has experienced an unusual pre-season while ensuring his key players reach full fitness at the right time.
Leadership Remains Unsettled
Flick has also temporarily resolved the question of Barcelona’s captaincy, although the final decision will only come once the squad is complete and the players have held their vote.
Raphinha, Eric García and Pedri will serve as captains for the time being, with Frenkie de Jong unavailable because of injury. Flick emphasised that his relationship with De Jong remains excellent and described the Dutch midfielder as a highly professional player.

The temporary arrangement reflects the uncertainty that can accompany the final weeks of a transfer window, with Flick acknowledging that players could still arrive or leave before the squad is finalised. Once that process is complete, the players will vote to determine the definitive captaincy structure.
For now, Flick’s focus is less on individual leadership titles and more on building a collective capable of sustaining Barcelona’s ambitions. His confidence is unmistakable, but the real examination begins when Elche stand between Barcelona and their first three points of the new La Liga campaign.
The Gamper against Al Ahly therefore represents more than a traditional pre-season celebration. It is the final major checkpoint before Barcelona begin their title defence, with Flick looking for evidence that his squad is prepared to turn confidence into another successful season.
