Emiliano Martinez has completed his move to Chelsea from Aston Villa, with the Argentine goalkeeper promising to bring his passion, winning mentality and commitment to the Stamford Bridge side.
The 33-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Chelsea after six seasons at Aston Villa, where he developed into one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers.
Martinez, who has played a key role in Argentina’s recent international success, said his approach to the game will remain unchanged as he begins a new chapter in west London.
“I’m all passion and I play with my heart. I will give 100 per cent every game, every training session to make the club, my teammates and the supporters proud.”

The goalkeeper also revealed that joining Chelsea was an easy decision for both himself and his family, with the opportunity to represent a club accustomed to competing for major honours proving difficult to turn down. “I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon. I can’t wait to get started.”
Martinez Brings Winning Mentality to Chelsea
The Argentine arrives at Chelsea with an impressive collection of honours behind him. He won the FA Cup with Arsenal in 2020 after beating Chelsea before moving to Aston Villa later that year, where he established himself as a key figure.
Martinez made 256 appearances for Villa across six seasons and helped the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League before playing a role in their Europa League triumph last season.
His international career has been equally decorated. Since making his Argentina debut in 2021, Martinez has won two Copa America titles and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, while earning 67 caps for La Albiceleste.
He also won the Yashin Trophy at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies, underlining his status among the world’s elite goalkeepers.
Chelsea Expect Martinez to Strengthen Goalkeeping Department
His arrival is expected to add experience and competition to Chelsea’s goalkeeping department following inconsistent performances from Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea’s goalkeeping options have undergone significant changes, with Filip Jorgensen joining Racing Strasbourg on loan and Mike Penders returning from his own loan spell from France to provide further depth.
Martinez has yet to feature for Aston Villa this season, sitting out their 4-0 defeat to Brighton on the opening weekend of the Premier League at the AMEX Stadium, while Villa have also strengthened their goalkeeping ranks with the signing of Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma.
For Chelsea, Martinez’s arrival is about more than adding another goalkeeper. The club is bringing in a proven winner who believes his mentality can help drive the team forward.
