North Korea has disclosed that it conducted a joint live-fire drill involving missiles, artillery and drones, claiming the exercise demonstrated the “huge destructive power” of its weapons when deployed in a coordinated attack.
The drill, conducted on Saturday and publicly reported by North Korea on Monday, involved different weapons systems being fired simultaneously. The exercise was designed to practice the operation of an integrated weapons control system, according to the country’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The coordinated nature of the drill is likely intended to strengthen North Korea’s ability to launch simultaneous attacks capable of overwhelming the air and missile defence systems of South Korea and the United States.
South Korea’s military had earlier reported detecting short-range ballistic missile launches from North Korea’s eastern coastal city of Wonsan on Saturday morning. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said several missiles were fired and travelled approximately 250 kilometres (155 miles) towards North Korea’s eastern waters.
The reported flight distances indicate that the weapons could be designed to strike targets in South Korea, including facilities hosting U.S. military forces. The launches therefore underscore the continued military threat posed by North Korea’s short-range missile capabilities to the Korean Peninsula.
After observing the drill, North Korean Marshal Pak Jong Chon said that the exercise would strengthen the country’s ability to systematically target an adversary’s military forces.
The drill would, he said, “improve the level of specialization to bring down the enemy’s armed forces organizationally and structurally once an order is issued.” Pak also said that the weapons systems deployed during the exercise demonstrated “the huge destructive power of concentrated fire,” according to KCNA.
The latest exercise marked North Korea’s first publicly reported ballistic missile launches in approximately three weeks. It also came just one day after the United States, South Korea and Japan concluded a trilateral military exercise, which Pyongyang has consistently condemned as a provocation.
Experts Say North Korea Not Slowing Testing Activities
Experts say that North Korea’s latest weapons activity demonstrates that Pyongyang is not slowing its testing programme, despite recent efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to create conditions that could potentially revive diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
In August, Trump directed the Pentagon to “substantially reduce” a major military exercise with South Korea, citing what he described as a good relationship with Kim. The decision was viewed as a possible attempt to make a diplomatic opening towards Pyongyang.
North Korea, however, rejected the gesture, arguing that shortening the military exercise did not alter what it considered its “provocative, aggressive nature.” The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise subsequently ended six days earlier than originally planned.
The latest missile launches suggest that reducing the scale of joint U.S.-South Korean military activities has not resulted in a corresponding reduction in North Korea’s weapons development.
Analysts believe Kim may now feel that he holds greater leverage in any potential negotiations with Washington than he did when he first met Trump in 2018 and 2019.
North Korea’s growing nuclear capabilities, combined with its strengthening relationships with Russia and China, have altered the strategic environment surrounding the country. Those developments could give Pyongyang greater confidence in resisting pressure from Washington and Seoul while seeking concessions in any future negotiations.
Kim has previously indicated that North Korea could return to talks with the United States if Washington abandons what he describes as its “hostile policy” towards his country and recognises North Korea’s status as a nuclear state.
The latest live-fire drill therefore comes amid both military escalation and diplomatic uncertainty. While Washington has signalled an interest in reducing tensions, Pyongyang continues to demonstrate its military capabilities, particularly those that could threaten South Korea and U.S. forces stationed on the peninsula.
The simultaneous use of missiles, artillery and drones further highlights North Korea’s effort to integrate different weapons systems rather than relying on individual capabilities in isolation.
The exercise reinforces South Korea’s concerns over the evolving nature of the North Korean threat, particularly the possibility of coordinated attacks designed to overwhelm existing defence systems. It also presents a challenge to any attempt by Washington to reopen negotiations while North Korea continues to expand and demonstrate its military capabilities.
North Korea’s latest drill thus sends a clear message that despite diplomatic overtures and adjustments to military exercises by its rivals, Pyongyang remains focused on strengthening its weapons capabilities and maintaining its leverage ahead of any potential future engagement with the United States.
