Green Finance Taxonomy Opens New Funding Doors for Businesses

Green Finance Taxonomy Opens New Funding Doors for Businesses

Ghanaian businesses could unlock new funding opportunities by aligning their operations with the country’s Green Finance Taxonomy, as sustainability increasingly becomes an important consideration in investment and lending decisions.

Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) is urging businesses to take advantage of the framework to identify sustainable investment opportunities, improve their environmental performance and position themselves to access emerging green financing opportunities.

The bank believes that companies that understand and incorporate environmental sustainability into their business strategies will be better placed to respond to changing financing requirements while strengthening their competitiveness in an increasingly sustainability-conscious business environment.

The call was made during a webinar organised as part of CBG’s Sustainability Week 2026. The event brought together experts from government, the financial sector and sustainability organisations to examine how businesses can use Ghana’s Green Finance Taxonomy to guide investment decisions and improve their operations.

The discussions highlighted the growing connection between environmental responsibility, access to finance and long-term business performance, particularly as financial institutions increasingly consider environmental factors in their lending activities.

Green Finance Taxonomy Creates New Investment Opportunities

Chief Economics Officer and Head of Climate Finance and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) at the Ministry of Finance, Richard Addo, explained that Ghana’s Green Finance Taxonomy provides a common framework for identifying economic activities that meet established environmental sustainability standards.

The framework is expected to help businesses and financial institutions determine which investments qualify as environmentally sustainable, providing greater clarity when assessing projects and making financing decisions.

Its application covers areas such as cleaner transportation, energy efficiency and other environmentally sustainable investments, creating opportunities for businesses willing to adjust their operations and investment strategies.

The development is particularly significant as companies increasingly face pressure to demonstrate that their activities contribute positively to environmental sustainability.

Businesses that understand the taxonomy could potentially identify projects that qualify for green financing while improving their ability to communicate their sustainability commitments to financial institutions and investors.

The framework also offers an opportunity to bring greater consistency to green investment decisions by providing businesses and lenders with common standards against which economic activities can be assessed.

Businesses Must Prepare Before Seeking Green Funding

While green financing presents opportunities, businesses have been cautioned against assuming that simply describing a project as environmentally friendly will make it eligible for funding.

John Akuoko Tawiah stressed the importance of understanding green financing requirements and assessing business activities against the environmental standards outlined in the taxonomy.

He noted that companies must look beyond individual projects and examine the environmental impact of their entire value chains.

This includes production processes, the sourcing of raw materials, products and services, as well as other activities that contribute to their overall environmental footprint.

Such an assessment can help businesses identify weaknesses in their operations, determine where improvements are necessary and demonstrate a genuine commitment to responsible business practices.

The approach could become particularly important as businesses seek to attract financing for expansion, modernisation and infrastructure improvements.

Companies that fail to understand the requirements could struggle to position themselves competitively as green financing becomes a more prominent feature of the financial sector.

Greenwashing Could Undermine Businesses’ Sustainability Efforts

Beyond access to funding, the webinar also raised concerns about greenwashing, a practice that could expose businesses to reputational risks and undermine confidence in sustainability initiatives.

Country Engagement Lead at Beyond the Science and CDKN, Dr Prince Ansah, warned businesses against making unsupported claims about their environmental performance.

He emphasised that sustainability decisions must be guided by scientific evidence, with organisations expected to demonstrate that their activities deliver measurable environmental benefits rather than simply labelling their products, services or investments as green.

His concerns point to an important challenge facing businesses seeking to benefit from the growing interest in sustainable financing.

As environmental considerations become more prominent in investment decisions, companies may increasingly be expected to provide credible information to support their sustainability claims.

Dr Ansah also called for sustainability guidelines and climate information to be made more accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Many smaller businesses lack the technical expertise and financial resources required to assess climate risks and develop appropriate responses.

Improving access to relevant information, he argued, would help SMEs move beyond awareness of climate change and adopt practical measures to strengthen their resilience.

Small Operational Changes Could Deliver Big Savings

Tolu Lacroix of the United Nations Global Compact Network Ghana encouraged businesses to begin their sustainability journey with manageable changes rather than waiting for expensive investments or large-scale transformation projects.

He identified procurement, energy consumption, water management and waste reduction as practical areas where organisations could begin improving their environmental performance.

Businesses were encouraged to reduce unnecessary printing, monitor electricity and water consumption, and introduce proper waste-separation systems.

Although these measures may appear relatively small, they could help organisations reduce operating costs while improving resource efficiency.

Mr Lacroix further emphasised the importance of measuring resource consumption and documenting savings to establish whether sustainability initiatives are delivering meaningful results.

Such records could help businesses identify operational inefficiencies, improve performance and redirect savings towards other areas of their operations.

This approach also provides companies with measurable information that can support their broader sustainability commitments.

CBG Embeds Sustainability Into Its Lending Strategy

CBG is also taking steps to demonstrate how financial institutions can integrate sustainability into their own operations and financing activities.

The bank’s management has approved the installation of solar power systems at eight locations as part of efforts to reduce its reliance on conventional energy sources.

It has also distributed reusable water bottles to staff to discourage the use of single-use plastics.

Beyond these internal initiatives, CBG has incorporated environmental considerations into its lending framework and customer onboarding processes.

The move is intended to encourage more environmentally responsible financing decisions while integrating sustainability into the bank’s relationship with customers.

These initiatives reflect the bank’s broader ambition to make environmental sustainability an important consideration in both its operational activities and lending decisions.

As Ghana’s Green Finance Taxonomy gains attention, businesses may need to rethink how they approach investment, production and environmental responsibility.

Companies that begin preparing now could be better positioned to identify sustainable investment opportunities, demonstrate their environmental credentials and compete for financing in an evolving financial environment.
