Prudential Bank Steps Up Prostate Cancer Education in Ghana

Bernard Gyebi, Managing Director of Prudential Bank

Prudential Bank has reaffirmed its dedication to the fight against prostate cancer, joining the global campaign throughout September to educate and sensitize the public about the disease.

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR), the Bank is organizing a series of screening events in Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale. This initiative follows a successful campaign in 2024, where over one thousand men benefited from free screenings and educational sessions.

The awareness campaign is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which focuses on good health and well-being. By offering education, screenings, and sponsorships, Prudential Bank aims to enhance public understanding of prostate cancer and highlight the importance of early detection. The initiative targets staff, customers, and the wider public, emphasizing proactive health practices.

Managing Director Bernard Gyebi stressed the significance of the campaign, noting that prostate cancer is a disease requiring critical attention.

“Our goal is to ensure that we deliver on our core responsibility, which is to our shareholders, customers, and employees, while contributing to a more sustainable society. Embarking on this exercise is our way of supporting prevention and early detection among men who are at risk.”

Expanding Outreach Beyond Screenings

Beyond the scheduled screenings, Prudential Bank will also disseminate informative content on prostate cancer via its website and social media platforms throughout the month. Internally, the Bank has designed activities to educate and engage its staff.

According to Gyebi, such efforts will help promote accessible and affordable healthcare while contributing to a deeper understanding of the disease. “We believe everyone should have access to healthcare, and we are confident that our efforts will contribute to improved health outcomes for men in Ghana,” Mr. Gyebi added.

The Bank’s focus on health extends to its internal workforce. Lilian A. Asante, Head of Human Resource at Prudential Bank, emphasized the institution’s commitment to its employees. “Our staff are our greatest asset, and we strive to create a healthy work environment that supports their well-being,” she said. The Bank is ensuring that staff members not only participate in the awareness programs but also serve as ambassadors for spreading critical information about the disease.

In addition to raising awareness, Prudential Bank has pledged to advocate for increased funding for prostate cancer research in Ghana. The Bank will also provide financial assistance to selected individuals affected by the disease. This dual approach—education coupled with financial support—underscores the institution’s holistic commitment to tackling the challenges posed by prostate cancer.

Globally, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, with over 1.4 million new cases reported each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In Ghana, the disease remains a major health challenge, with many cases being diagnosed at advanced stages, making treatment more difficult and survival rates lower.

The disease’s impact stretches beyond individuals to affect families and communities, causing both emotional and financial strain. Without early detection and proper treatment, prostate cancer can lead to severe health complications and death. However, evidence shows that early screening and intervention significantly improve patient outcomes.
