CIB Ghana Charts New Course for Banking Professionalism with Ethics 2.0 and Digital Academy

The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana) has rounded off 2025 with renewed momentum, unveiling a strategic direction that places ethics, leadership and digital skills at the heart of banking professionalism.

Through initiatives such as Ethics 2.0, the Branch CEO programme and the Digital Academy, the Institute is reinforcing its role as a key driver of competence and trust within Ghana’s financial sector as it prepares for an ambitious 2026.

Speaking at the Institute’s annual Thanksgiving Service and Carols Night in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer of CIB Ghana, Robert Dzato, described 2025 as a year of significant institutional progress. He noted that the Institute remained focused on its statutory mandate to promote the study of banking and regulate professional practice, while adapting to the changing demands of the industry.

Driving Ethics Beyond Compliance

One of the major highlights of CIB Ghana’s 2025 agenda has been the intensified focus on ethics across the banking industry. Mr. Dzato explained that ethical conduct remains the backbone of public confidence in financial institutions, making it critical for bankers to uphold integrity at all levels of operation.

The Ethics 2.0 initiative, he said, is designed to move beyond rule-based compliance and foster a deeper understanding of ethical values among banking professionals. By encouraging ethical reasoning and responsible decision-making, the programme seeks to embed integrity into everyday banking practice. According to the CEO, strengthening ethics is essential to deepening trust in the sector as Ghana navigates a complex economic and regulatory environment.

Alongside ethics, CIB Ghana has prioritised skills development as a key pillar of its growth strategy. The Digital Academy is emerging as an important platform for equipping banking professionals with relevant digital competencies. With technology reshaping financial services through digital banking, fintech innovation and data-driven solutions, the Institute recognises the need for continuous learning to keep professionals relevant and competitive.

The Branch CEO programme is another initiative gaining traction. It focuses on strengthening leadership and management capacity at the branch level, where strategic decisions often translate directly into customer experience and operational performance. Mr. Dzato noted that branch managers play a critical role in governance, risk management and service delivery. Enhancing their leadership and ethical judgement is therefore central to improving overall industry standards.

While introducing new initiatives, CIB Ghana continues to strengthen its core programmes, particularly the Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB) qualification. The ACIB remains the Institute’s flagship professional pathway and a cornerstone of banking education in Ghana. It attracts a wide range of candidates, from young entrants into the profession to experienced bankers seeking professional recognition and advancement.

According to the Institute, sustaining the quality and relevance of the ACIB qualification is critical to ensuring a steady pipeline of competent professionals who can support the growth and stability of the financial sector.

Strategic Partnerships for Responsible Banking

CIB Ghana’s progress in 2025 has also been supported by strategic collaborations with key institutions. Mr. Dzato highlighted partnerships with the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Bank of Ghana. These collaborations are aimed at strengthening sustainability, responsible finance and sound governance across the financial system.

The CEO explained that modern banking professionalism must align with broader development goals, including environmental responsibility and inclusive growth. By working with regulators and development partners, the Institute is helping to position bankers as trusted stewards of financial and social capital.

Looking ahead, CIB Ghana has identified 2026 as a defining year in its development. One of the most significant plans is the extension of selected programmes beyond Ghana into the West African sub-region. The Chartered Banker Executive Leadership Programme is expected to spearhead this regional expansion.

Mr. Dzato described the programme as one of the Institute’s most impactful offerings, noting that it graduated about 57 senior professionals in 2024, including executives from commercial banks and the central bank. The success of the programme has strengthened the Institute’s resolve to share Ghana’s professional banking expertise with other markets in the region.

According to him, the broader objective is to contribute to Africa’s human capital development by producing trusted professionals capable of supporting financial stability and economic transformation across borders.

Leadership Reflections and Staff Recognition

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Governing Council, the President of CIB Ghana, Benjamin Amenumey, also described 2025 as a year of transformation and growth. He expressed appreciation to the Governing Council, management, staff, fellows and members of the Institute, as well as stakeholders such as the Ghana Association of Banks and the Bank of Ghana, for their sustained support.

Mr. Amenumey emphasised that values such as integrity, service and excellence must remain central to professional practice as the Institute moves into 2026. He expressed confidence that CIB Ghana would continue to elevate its standing and influence within the financial sector.

As part of the event, the Institute honoured long-serving staff members, including Elorm Kobla Seshime, Rosemary Yaa Amponsah Offei, Margaret Adofo, Paul Gadzekpo and Daniel Aboagye, in recognition of their dedication and contribution to institutional growth.
