The Central Adoption Authority (CAA) has held its first-quarter Board Meeting, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening adoption processes and promoting the welfare of vulnerable children across Ghana.

The meeting brought together board members and key stakeholders to review ongoing efforts, assess institutional progress, and explore ways to improve adoption systems in line with national child protection priorities.

Officials emphasised the need for a transparent, efficient, and child-centred adoption framework that ensures every child is placed in a safe and nurturing environment.

Minister Calls for Child-Centred Adoption Processes

Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, underscored the critical role of the Board in safeguarding the best interests of children.

She noted that the Authority is mandated to regulate and oversee adoption procedures, assess applications, and ensure compliance with established standards.

According to her, adoption must go beyond administrative processes and focus on the long-term well-being of children. She further stressed that every child placed under adoption should be guaranteed a secure, supportive, and loving home.

The Minister commended board members for their dedication and encouraged them to continue strengthening systems that protect children’s rights.

As part of the meeting, the Minister administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to new board members, including Marian Kpakpah, the new Chief Director of the Ministry, who assumes the role of Chairperson of the Board.

The Minister formally introduced her to members and expressed confidence in her leadership, urging the Board to extend full cooperation and support.

In her remarks, Dr. Kpakpah pledged to work collaboratively with stakeholders to strengthen the Authority’s operations. She emphasised the importance of integrity, professionalism, and a child-centred approach in all adoption decisions.

According to her, the Board will work diligently to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow in a stable and supportive family environment.

Stakeholders Discuss Reforms and Recognise Contributions

The Head of the Central Adoption Authority, Stephen Dombo, presented an overview of the Board’s mandate, highlighting its responsibility to regulate adoption practices, enforce compliance, and promote ethical standards.

He noted that the work of the Authority remains central to protecting children and ensuring responsible placements. The meeting also featured extensive discussions on improving efficiency, transparency, and coordination in adoption processes.

Participants explored strategies to strengthen systems, enhance stakeholder collaboration, and ensure accountability across all levels of the adoption framework.

A key highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a citation to Bright Appiah of Child Rights International in recognition of his contributions to child protection.

He was commended for his advocacy efforts and his role in supporting the establishment of a child caregiving centre at the Ministry, which provides a safe space for nursing mothers to leave their children while at work.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from board members to strengthen adoption systems and ensure that every child is given the opportunity to grow in a safe, loving, and supportive family environment.

Officials reiterated that improving adoption processes remains a key priority in advancing Ghana’s broader child protection agenda. They emphasised that sustained collaboration, strong leadership, and effective policy implementation will be essential in achieving long-term impact.
