Ghana Grid Company LTD (GRIDCo) has commissioned a state-of-the-art 120/145MVA Siemens Energy Power Transformer at its Afienya Substation, marking a pivotal advancement in the nation’s energy infrastructure.

This strategic upgrade replaces the previous 66MVA unit, effectively more than doubling the substation’s capacity to meet the surging electricity needs of the Greater Accra Region.

By integrating this high-capacity Siemens technology, GRIDCo has significantly bolstered the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), ensuring that the energy corridor serving Accra, Dawhenya, and neighboring communities is equipped with the necessary “firm capacity” to handle modern industrial and residential loads.

“The successful commissioning highlights GRIDCo’s commitment to reliability, innovation, and operational excellence. The upgrade addresses increasing load demand from ECG’s expanding network, improves reliability, and supports future growth. We celebrate the dedication and hard work of all staff involved in delivering this critical milestone.”

The project represents a major technical milestone for the Tema Operational Area, specifically designed to address the increasing load demand stemming from the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) rapidly expanding distribution network.

Led by the expertise of Ing. Dr. Benefit E.A.K Patu, Supervisor for Electrical Maintenance, the installation was a collaborative effort involving Ing. Francis Koomson, Supervisor for Protection and Control, and Mr. Albert Baiden-Amissah, Supervisor for Line Maintenance.

This new infrastructure does not merely add volume; it improves overall system reliability and provides the headroom required for future socio-economic growth in the region.

As the energy landscape shifts toward more integrated and stable solutions, the successful execution of this project by in-house engineers highlights a commitment to “operational excellence and innovation” within Ghana’s utility sector.

Engineering Excellence and NITS Reinforcement

The deployment of the 120/145MVA Siemens unit is a masterstroke in technical resilience, specifically engineered to mitigate the risks of transformer overloading that often plague developing power grids.

By moving from a 66MVA capacity to a peak of 145MVA, GRIDCo has established an “N-1 contingency” at the Afienya node, meaning the system can maintain stable operations even if one component fails or requires maintenance.

This level of redundancy is vital for the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), as it prevents the localized voltage drops and “tripping” sequences that can lead to wider regional blackouts.

The project stands as a testament to the proficiency of the Tema Operational Area team, who managed the complex synchronization of the new Siemens unit into the existing high-voltage framework.

Strengthening Regional Power Stability

From a green transition and energy efficiency perspective, the new Siemens Energy transformer offers superior thermal performance and lower technical losses compared to the aged 66MVA unit it replaces.

High-capacity transformers are inherently more efficient at handling peak loads, reducing the “waste heat” generated during energy conversion, which translates to a more stable voltage profile for end-users in Dawhenya and surrounding suburbs.

This stability is particularly crucial for the industrial sectors in the Tema-Afienya enclave, where “clean and consistent power” is a prerequisite for sensitive machinery and sustainable manufacturing processes.

By stabilizing the local grid, GRIDCo effectively reduces the reliance on decentralized diesel generators, subtly pushing the region toward a more centralized, efficient, and lower-carbon energy future.

This upgrade acts as the backbone for the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) modernization efforts, providing a robust bulk supply point that can accommodate the “expanding network” of residential and commercial developments.

As urbanization stretches further into the outskirts of Accra, the 120/145MVA transformer provides a 120% increase in available energy throughput, essentially “future-proofing” the Afienya Substation for the next decade of growth.

The successful transition, described by observers as a “milestone of engineering dedication,” ensures that as the demand for electricity grows, the transmission infrastructure will remain a catalyst rather than a bottleneck.

GRIDCo’s proactive investment in Siemens-grade technology underscores a broader strategy to transform Ghana into a regional energy hub through superior technical standards and reliable service delivery.
