The Accra High Court has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, following roughly nine days in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations on charges linked to false publication.
The ruling was delivered on Thursday, May 21, 2026, bringing temporary relief to the outspoken politician after his earlier remand by Accra Circuit Court 9 sparked public and political debate.
The High Court admitted Abronye DC to bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties, while imposing additional conditions aimed at ensuring his continued availability for the ongoing legal process.
Court Imposes Strict Bail Conditions
As part of the bail terms, the court ordered Abronye DC to surrender all passports and travel documents to the court registry. He is also required to report to the Criminal Investigations Department every fortnight as investigations and legal proceedings continue.

The conditions form part of efforts by the court to balance the accused person’s liberty with the need to ensure compliance with the judicial process.
The ruling effectively overturns the earlier decision of the Circuit Court, which had denied him bail and ordered his remand into BNI custody pending further proceedings.
Defence Team Pushes for Release
Abronye DC’s legal team was led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, who moved the application before the High Court after the Circuit Court rejected an earlier request for bail.
The defence argued that the remand violated the accused person’s fundamental liberties and urged the High Court to intervene and grant temporary release pending trial.

The legal challenge came shortly after the Circuit Court decision attracted significant public attention, particularly among supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party, who criticised the remand order as excessive.
The defence team maintained that Abronye DC was entitled to bail and should not continue to remain in custody while the substantive case was being heard.
State Declines to Oppose Bail
The prosecution, represented by Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai, waived the state’s right to oppose the bail application before the High Court.
That decision effectively cleared the path for the court to consider and grant the application without extended legal contest over the accused person’s temporary release.
The state’s position marked a notable shift from the earlier proceedings at the Circuit Court level, where concerns had been raised about the possibility of reoffending.
Background to the Case
Abronye DC was previously remanded by Circuit Court 9 after being arraigned on charges relating to the publication of false news. The Circuit Court judge, Kunsong, denied him bail on grounds that he posed a potential risk of reoffending.
According to the court, the alleged offence under consideration was reportedly committed while the accused was already on bail in a separate matter. That reasoning formed the basis of the remand order that kept him in BNI custody for more than a week before the High Court intervention.
His legal team subsequently escalated the matter to the High Court, seeking a reversal of the remand directive and arguing for his constitutional right to liberty while standing trial.
Political and Public Attention
The case has generated significant political attention due to Abronye DC’s prominence within the opposition New Patriotic Party and his outspoken role in Ghana’s political discourse.
His remand became the subject of criticism from sections of the opposition, with some party figures arguing that recent legal actions against opposition members raised broader concerns about political freedoms and the treatment of dissenting voices.
The matter also triggered legal and constitutional debates over judicial discretion in granting or denying bail, especially in cases involving allegations of repeated offences.

The High Court’s decision to admit him to bail is likely to calm some political tensions surrounding the case, although the substantive criminal proceedings remain ongoing.
Case Continues Before the Courts
Despite his temporary release, Abronye DC still faces the charges brought against him, and the legal process is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
The court’s decision does not amount to an acquittal or dismissal of the case, but rather grants him conditional freedom pending further hearings and determination of the matter.
The development now places focus on the substantive prosecution and the evidence that will be presented before the courts regarding the allegations of false publication.
For now, Abronye DC’s release from custody marks another major development in a case that continues to attract both legal scrutiny and political commentary across the country.
