To address the global shea industry relying heavily on the manual harvesting of nuts from wild, naturally occurring trees, the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) is prioritizing institutional partnerships with national research bodies to accelerate the deployment of high-yielding, short-gestation plant varieties.

As part of this ongoing strategy to shift the economic outlook of Ghana’s northern savannah ecological zone toward structured agricultural industrialization, the Chief Executive Officer of the TCDA, Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, has led an executive delegation on a comprehensive working tour of the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) Bole Sub-Station in the Savannah Region.

The TCDA noted that the move to replace wild foraging with highly scientific crop cultivation is because the traditional model faces significant bottlenecks, particularly due to the exceptionally long gestation period of wild shea trees, which frequently require 15 to 20 years to produce their first viable yields.

“The visit took the CEO and his team to CRIG’s nursery and shea plantation, where research showcased improved shea varieties developed to address the long gestation period associated with the naturally occurring shea trees in the wild.

“The Bole Sub-Station is recognized for its pioneering research, particularly the development of short-gestation shea seedlings and cashew capable of producing quality yields within a shorter timeframe”

The TCDA assessment of the institute’s specialized nursery infrastructure and active experimental shea plantations focused on evaluating breakthrough research to fundamentally transform the growth metrics, quality standards, and overall investment appeal of Ghana’s shea and cashew value chains.

For Dr. Okrah the primary objective of the visit was to gain first-hand insight into agronomic advancements capable of compressing the production timeline for tree crops.

He noted that seedlings that produce high-quality yields in a fraction of the traditional timeframe effectively remove the single largest barrier preventing commercial farmers and institutional investors from entering the shea cultivation market.

During the field briefing, the CRIG technical team walked the TCDA leadership through the exact propagation processes, plant performance characteristics, and strict agronomic management practices required to sustain these improved varieties.

This structured knowledge transfer was described as critical for the TCDA as it prepares to scale up extension services across the northern territories.

Shifting the industry from an unpredictable, wild-collection model to organized, plantation-style farming will allow the authority to guarantee consistent supply volumes and uniform nut quality – two essential prerequisites for securing long-term supply contracts with major global cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and confectionery manufacturers.

Collaborative Alignment

A major focus of the high-level dialogue centered on assessing the operational, logistical, and infrastructure challenges currently facing the CRIG Bole Sub-Station.

While the institute’s research scientists have successfully achieved major biological breakthroughs in seedling development, moving these innovations from experimental plots into mass production requires strong institutional backing and substantial capital investment.

The TCDA and CRIG executives explored collaborative, public-private funding models designed to upgrade local laboratory tools, expand greenhouse capacities, and protect the genetic integrity of the improved seedling varieties during large-scale distribution, directly aligning TCDA’s regulatory power with CRIG’s technical expertise.

Dr. Osei Okrah emphasized that the authority will work actively to bridge the gap between laboratory research and practical farming, creating a highly responsive agricultural development framework.

This joint approach ensures that scientific findings do not sit unused on research shelves, but are instead translated into practical, well-funded field interventions that directly benefit smallholder cooperatives and large-scale agricultural investors throughout the region.

The scientific updates achieved at the Bole Sub-Station are closely tied to the TCDA’s broader policy goal of enhancing the international competitiveness of Ghana’s non-traditional agricultural exports.

With buyers increasingly demanding strict product traceability and verified quality standards in the global marketplace, introducing engineered seedlings with predictable growth patterns, uniform oil content, and stable chemical profiles has the potential to establish a reliable national grading system for exported shea kernels and unrefined shea butter.

Furthermore, deploying these short-gestation seedlings serves as a powerful strategy to improve rural livelihoods and protect local environments. As climate variations continue to impact the semi-arid northern savannah, establishing structured, drought-resistant tree crop plantations offers a sustainable source of income for rural communities.

The TCDA boss announced plans to combine the rollout of these new seedlings with comprehensive training on best agronomic practices, ensuring that local farmers can maximize their land use efficiency, minimize post-harvest losses, and consistently meet the strict phytosanitary regulations required by international import markets.

The engagement concluded with an agreement to draft a joint development roadmap focused on accelerating the commercialization of the newly developed tree varieties to turn the shea sector into a modern, highly lucrative export industry.
