The Member of Parliament for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip, Honourable Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Chief Whip position following the appointment of James Agalga as the new Majority Leader. He disclosed that the final decision on the leadership change was reached after consultations involving parliamentary leadership and the National Democratic Congress.

The change places James Agalga at the head of the NDC parliamentary caucus, with Dafeamekpor retaining his role as Majority Chief Whip. According to the South Dayi MP, the arrangement provides a clear division of responsibilities within the Majority side and allows the caucus to continue its work without disruption.

Honourable Dafeamekpor also dismissed suggestions that he was disappointed by the decision, stressing that he values the Chief Whip role and considers it essential to the effective management of parliamentary business. His comments sought to settle speculation surrounding his name after it emerged as one of the possible options for the Majority Leader position.

“I’m the Chief Whip, and I love being the Chief Whip. I believe that even in the House, if you have an effective Chief Whip, then the job is easier.”

The Majority Chief Whip also highlighted the importance of a strong whipping structure in Parliament, noting that the Majority Leader relies on an organised team to coordinate members and advance government business. He pointed to the role of the two deputy whips as an important part of that structure.

Referencing the latest leadership arrangement, the MP indicated that Agalga’s appointment follows the President’s decision to make changes within the ministerial structure and parliamentary leadership. He explained that the move creates the need for a direct replacement after Mahama Ayariga was appointed to a ministerial portfolio.

The new Majority Leader is also a figure Dafeamekpor has known for many years, including their time at school and at the Ghanaian Bar. His assessment of Agalga focuses on the parliamentarian’s legal background, parliamentary experience and ability to engage effectively during debates.

Describing Agalga’s parliamentary record, the South Dayi MP portrayed him as a skilled debater with strong knowledge of parliamentary procedure and law. He highlighted the ability of the Upper East MP to introduce perspectives during debates and command the attention of the chamber.

Dafeamekpor also traced Agalga’s experience to his previous responsibilities within Parliament, including his work on the Defence and Interior Committee. The new Majority Leader has also played a significant role in legislative work and contributed to the passage of the Community Service Bill.

The Majority Chief Whip noted that Agalga has continued working for the parliamentary caucus despite missing out on ministerial appointments during the earlier round of government appointments. His assessment suggested that the latest leadership role recognises a record built through parliamentary service and committee responsibilities.

Agalga’s previous experience as Deputy Minister of the Interior also features prominently in the assessment of his suitability for leadership. His tenure as Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee from 2017 and subsequent service as chairman were cited as evidence of his familiarity with parliamentary business.

Ministerial Reshuffle Brings Dynamic Roles Across Key Portfolios

The latest ministerial reshuffle has also altered the responsibilities of several senior members of the government, with Honourable Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor describing the changes as strategic appointments across important sectors. He noted that the adjustments follow vacancies created after the deaths of Dr Alhaji Murtala Muhammed and Dr Omane Boamah.

Among the prominent changes is the movement of Honourable Kenneth Gilbert Adjei to the Defence Ministry and the appointment of Ahmed Ibrahim to the Ministry of Works And Housing. Dafeamekpor viewed both appointments as suitable choices based on the experience and previous responsibilities of the two politicians.

The Majority Chief Whip particularly highlighted Ken’s record as a quiet yet effective public official, suggesting that his working style should not be measured solely through public visibility. His transfer to Defence is linked to his previous experience as a deputy minister in the same sector.

On the appointment of Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings as Minister for Environment, Dafeamekpor indicated that the appointment aligns with her professional interests and parliamentary experience, particularly her work in environmental and scientific matters. The legislator also linked the appointment to earlier expectations within political circles that Dr Agyeman Rawlings would eventually assume responsibility for the Environment portfolio.

Her experience extends into national security and parliamentary oversight through her role as chairperson of the Intelligence Committee. She also serves on the Defence Committee, giving her exposure to both environmental matters and national security discussions.

“If you follow Zanetor closely, her work and her expertise are more rather in the areas of environment and science.”

Honourable Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor

Dafeamekpor also addressed speculation that Dr Agyeman Rawlings could have been appointed to the Defence Ministry. He attributed some of that expectation to her family background and public profile, while stressing that her professional interests point strongly towards environmental and scientific work.
