FDA Probes Viral Claims of Plantain Ripening Chemicals at Medina

Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has launched an investigation into a video circulating online alleging the use of chemicals to accelerate the ripening of plantain at Madina Market in Accra.

Addressing the matter, the FDA explained that its response was driven by its core mandate to safeguard public health and safety, a responsibility that compelled swift engagement with the issue once the video began gaining traction online.

According to the FDA, the investigation is carried out in collaboration with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, bringing together national regulatory oversight and local environmental health expertise to examine the claims more thoroughly.

“The claims have sparked concerns about the safety of plantain being sold at the market.”

This collaborative approach reflects the Authority’s standard practice of drawing on local oversight structures already familiar with market operations, an arrangement that strengthens the credibility and reach of the investigation while ensuring that findings are grounded in direct, localised engagement rather than remote assessment alone.

Traders and Individual In Video Engaged Directly

The FDA disclosed that its investigation involved direct engagement with traders operating within the market, as well as the individual featured in the viral video, as part of efforts to determine the veracity of the claims circulating online.

“We engaged traders in the market, and the individual featured in the video, to establish the veracity or otherwise of the said video.”

This direct, on-the-ground approach underscores the Authority’s commitment to verifying claims before drawing conclusions or issuing public guidance, particularly on matters concerning food safety that could carry significant public health implications if left unaddressed or misrepresented.

The FDA’s decision to act quickly on the circulating video highlights the seriousness with which the Authority treats allegations involving potentially harmful practices within the food supply chain, particularly those affecting widely consumed staples such as plantain, a food item central to many Ghanaian households’ daily diets.

By moving swiftly to investigate rather than allowing the claims to circulate unchecked, the FDA appears keen to prevent the spread of unverified information that could either cause undue public alarm or, conversely, mask a genuine food safety concern requiring regulatory action.

Balancing Public Concern with Due Process

The Authority’s approach reflects a broader regulatory principle of verifying claims through direct fieldwork before making public determinations, an approach that helps protect both public health and the interests of legitimate traders who could be unfairly implicated by unverified social media content.

This measured but urgent response also signals the FDA’s awareness of how quickly food safety concerns can escalate on social media platforms, where video content alleging chemical misuse can spread rapidly and shape public perception long before any official investigation concludes.

With investigations into the matter now underway, attention turns to what the FDA’s findings will reveal about the specific claims made in the video, and whether any corrective or enforcement action will be necessary based on the outcome of the inquiry.

Given the public concern typically triggered by allegations of chemical use in food ripening, particularly when shared widely on social media, the Authority’s eventual findings are likely to be closely watched by consumers, market traders, and public health stakeholders across the country.

The FDA has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for the conclusion of its investigations, but its prompt initial response signals an intent to address the matter with urgency, particularly given the potential implications for public confidence in the safety of produce sold at one of Accra’s busiest and most frequented markets.
