Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of the Senegal national team, marking the beginning of a new era for the Lions of Teranga following their disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The former Arsenal captain replaces Pape Thiaw, whose tenure ended after Senegal’s elimination from the World Cup at the Round of 32 stage. Thiaw’s side surrendered a 2-0 lead against Belgium before eventually losing 3-2 after extra time.
Vieira, who was born in Dakar, returns to his country of birth to take charge of the national team for the first time in his managerial career. Despite his Senegalese roots, he represented France internationally, winning the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000 and earning 107 caps for Les Bleus.
The 50-year-old enjoyed an illustrious playing career, establishing himself as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
He made more than 400 appearances for Arsenal, winning three Premier League titles and captaining the club during its historic unbeaten 2003/04 campaign.
Vieira also played for Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City before retiring in 2011.
His coaching career has subsequently taken him to New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa, giving him experience across MLS and Europe’s major leagues.
Immediate AFCON Qualification Challenge
Vieira’s immediate priority will be guiding Senegal through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin next month. Senegal have been drawn alongside Mozambique, Ethiopia and Sudan and will be expected to secure qualification from the group.

The 2027 AFCON finals will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027. The tournament will be the first edition of the competition to be staged across three countries.
Senegal will enter the qualifying campaign with significant expectations after establishing themselves as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
The Lions of Teranga won their first AFCON title in 2022 and have remained regular contenders at major continental tournaments.
For Vieira, the challenge will be to quickly impose his tactical philosophy while maintaining the core of a squad that has delivered considerable success in recent years.
The likes of Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly and other experienced players will provide a strong foundation, while the new coach will also be expected to integrate emerging talent.
The appointment also comes at a significant period for Senegalese football. The national team endured a disappointing World Cup exit, while the country’s football authorities continue to deal with the fallout from the controversial 2025 AFCON final against Morocco with the case still pending at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and set to be heard on October 8.

Vieira’s experience at the highest level of European football is expected to help Senegal navigate the transition. His knowledge of elite football, leadership experience and familiarity with the demands of managing high-profile players were key qualities that made him an attractive candidate for the position.
His most recent managerial role was at Genoa, whom he coached in Serie A before leaving the club in November 2025.
The Senegal job therefore represents a fresh opportunity for Vieira to rebuild his managerial reputation while taking his first steps into international coaching.
The former France international will have limited time to prepare before competitive action begins in September. His first task will be to ensure Senegal make a strong start to the AFCON qualifying campaign.
With a talented squad, high expectations and a nation demanding success, Vieira faces a major challenge. His appointment provides Senegal with a manager who understands the pressures of elite football, but his success will ultimately be judged by whether he can turn that experience into trophies with the Lions of Teranga.
