GSE-CI Falls Below 15,000 Points After Trading Heavy Losses

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed a dramatic surge in trading activity as investors exchanged nearly 2.9 million shares in a session marked by sharp movements across several listed equities.

Despite a massive increase in both trading volume and turnover, the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) slipped below the psychologically important 15,000-point level, raising fresh concerns about the short-term direction of the equities market.

At the close of trading, a total of 2,889,983 shares changed hands, representing a market value of GH¢15.96 million. The figures marked a remarkable 126% increase in trading volume and a 150% jump in turnover compared with the previous trading session on Wednesday, August 26.

GSE Trading Activity Explodes

The latest session delivered a major boost in market activity, with 28 listed equities participating in trading.

The surge in activity suggests that investors were significantly more active despite the mixed performance of share prices. The sharp increase in turnover also indicates that substantial funds moved through the market during the session.

However, the strong trading activity did not translate into a broad-based rally.

Four equities recorded gains, while eight ended the session in negative territory. This created a market environment where trading volumes surged even as selling pressure weighed heavily on several stocks.

The contrasting movements underline the increasingly volatile nature of the Ghanaian equities market, where individual stocks are recording significant price swings while the broader index remains under pressure.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin Leads Gainers

Dannex Ayrton Starwin PLC emerged as the biggest winner of the session after its share price jumped 9.58%.

The stock closed at GH¢1.83 per share, making it the strongest-performing equity among the gainers.

Digicut Production & Advertising followed closely, recording a 9.09% increase in its share price.

Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also advanced, gaining 2.76%, while GCB Bank posted a modest 0.23% increase.

The performance of these four equities provided some relief in an otherwise challenging session for the broader market.

Enterprise Group Leads Market Decline

While some stocks rallied sharply, several equities came under intense selling pressure.

Enterprise Group PLC suffered the biggest decline, losing 8.74% to close at GH¢6.16 per share.

Trust Bank Gambia followed with an 8.33% decline, while SIC Insurance Company dropped 8.09%.

Clydestone Ghana also recorded a significant decline of 7.41%.

The sharp losses among these equities contributed to the weakness in the benchmark index and highlighted the uneven nature of investor sentiment during the session.

MTN Ghana Dominates Trading

Despite the mixed price performance, MTN Ghana dominated trading activity by a wide margin.

The telecommunications giant recorded an impressive 1.95 million shares traded, accounting for a substantial portion of the day’s total volume.

Intravenous Infusions followed with 434,336 shares, while Kasapreko recorded 107,423 shares.

Enterprise Group rounded out the leading actively traded stocks with 77,742 shares changing hands.

The heavy activity in MTN Ghana demonstrates the continued importance of highly liquid stocks to overall GSE market activity. Large-volume trades in major counters can have a significant influence on daily turnover and investor participation.

GSE Composite Index Falls Below 15,000

The biggest headline from the session, however, was the decline in the GSE Composite Index.

The GSE-CI dropped 88.67 points, equivalent to 0.59%, to close at 14,999.64 points.

The fall pushed the benchmark just below the closely watched 15,000-point mark.

The index has now recorded a 0.43% loss over one week and a much larger 2.93% decline over four weeks.

Despite the recent weakness, the bigger picture remains remarkably positive. The GSE-CI is still sitting on an impressive 71.03% year-to-date gain.

This means that although the market has experienced some correction in recent weeks, investors who entered the market earlier in the year have continued to enjoy substantial gains.

Financial Stocks Offer Some Relief

The financial sector delivered a slightly different performance.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) increased by 0.17%, closing at 7,887.51 points.

The index also recorded a 0.17% gain over one week, although it remained down 4.33% over four weeks.

On a year-to-date basis, however, financial stocks have performed strongly, with the GSE-FSI recording a 69.73% gain.

The contrasting movement between the Composite Index and Financial Stocks Index suggests that some financial equities remained relatively resilient despite broader market weakness.

GSE Market Value Remains Massive

The Ghana Stock Exchange ended the session with a total market capitalisation of approximately GH¢284.9 billion, equivalent to about US$25.4 billion.

The size of the market reflects the growing value of listed companies and the strong performance recorded by several equities throughout the year.

Yet, the latest decline in the GSE-CI could signal a period of consolidation after the market’s extraordinary gains.

With the benchmark index still up more than 70% in 2026, investors may increasingly focus on profit-taking, corporate earnings and the sustainability of recent share price gains.

What Comes Next for the GSE?

The latest trading session has sent mixed signals.

On one hand, the huge increase in volume and turnover demonstrates strong investor participation and liquidity. On the other hand, the fall in the GSE-CI below 15,000 points shows that increased activity is not necessarily translating into broad market gains.

Investors will be watching closely to determine whether the index can reclaim the 15,000-point level or whether further selling pressure could trigger additional declines.

In the intervening time, the Ghana Stock Exchange remains one of Africa’s strongest-performing equity markets on a year-to-date basis, but the latest session shows that the spectacular rally is facing renewed volatility.
