The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the new month with a burst of trading activity, as investors exchanged more than 1.8 million shares in a session that delivered stronger market volume but weaker turnover.
At the close of the first weekday trading session, a total of 1,848,208 shares changed hands, representing a market value of GH¢5.14 million.
The latest performance points to a market that remains highly active despite mixed movements across individual equities. Compared with the previous trading session on Friday, August 28, trading volume improved by 47%, although turnover declined by 19%.
The contrasting figures suggest that investors were significantly more active in terms of the number of shares traded, but much of the activity was concentrated in relatively lower-priced stocks.
GSE Records Mixed Trading Performance
A total of 30 listed equities participated in trading during the session, with seven recording price gains while five stocks ended the day in negative territory.
The performance highlighted the uneven nature of investor sentiment as some stocks attracted buying interest while others came under considerable selling pressure.
Despite the mixed performance among individual equities, the broader market remained positive, with the benchmark GSE Composite Index gaining ground.
This indicates that the positive movements in selected heavyweight equities were sufficient to outweigh losses recorded by some companies.
Digicut Leads the Gainers
Digicut Production & Advertising emerged as the strongest performer among the advancing stocks.
The company’s share price increased by 7.69%, closing at GH¢0.28 per share.
SIC Insurance Company followed with a 3.01% gain, reflecting renewed buying interest in the insurance stock.
Ecobank Transnational also advanced, gaining 1.64%, while Intravenous Infusions increased by 1.33%.
The gains demonstrate that investor interest remains spread across different segments of the market, even as broader market conditions continue to produce mixed signals.
For investors tracking momentum stocks, the performance of Digicut stands out, particularly given the company’s relatively low closing share price and the sizeable percentage increase recorded during the session.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin Suffers Sharpest Loss
While several equities attracted buyers, others experienced significant selling pressure.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin recorded the biggest decline of the session, with its share price falling by 8.08% to close at GH¢1.82.
CalBank followed closely, recording a 6.67% decline.
Kasapreko also lost ground, falling by 2.02%, while Trust Bank Gambia declined by 0.83%.
The sharp declines in some of these stocks helped create a highly mixed trading environment, with investors appearing selective in their positioning.
CalBank’s performance was particularly notable because the bank simultaneously recorded the highest trading volume during the session.

CalBank Dominates Trading Volume
Despite its price decline, CalBank emerged as the most actively traded equity on the exchange.
A total of 826,527 CalBank shares changed hands, accounting for a substantial portion of the day’s overall volume.
Kasapreko followed with 424,149 shares, while MTN Ghana recorded 252,914 shares.
Ecobank Transnational completed the top four most actively traded equities with 59,297 shares changing hands.
The concentration of trading in CalBank, Kasapreko and MTN Ghana highlights the significant role of selected equities in driving activity on the exchange.
The high volume recorded by CalBank alongside its price decline could also indicate intense repositioning among investors as buyers and sellers battled over the stock.
GSE Composite Index Climbs Above 15,000
The broader market delivered a positive performance despite the mixed movements across individual stocks.
The GSE Composite Index increased by 55.84 points, equivalent to a 0.37% gain, to close at 15,076.25 points.
The latest increase means the benchmark has recorded a 0.19% gain over the past week.
However, the index remains down by 1.86% over the past four weeks, indicating that the recent improvement has not yet fully reversed the market’s short-term weakness.
The bigger picture remains significantly stronger.
On a year-to-date basis, the GSE Composite Index has surged by 71.9%, reinforcing the exchange’s remarkable performance in 2026.
Financial Stocks Also Push Higher
The financial sector also ended the session on a positive note.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index rose by 0.18% to close at 7,904.58 points.
The index has gained 0.64% over the past week, although it remains down by 3.65% over four weeks.
Its year-to-date performance remains impressive, with the GSE-FSI recording a 70.09% gain.
The figures suggest that despite recent corrections, financial stocks continue to make a significant contribution to the exchange’s strong annual performance.
Market Capitalisation Reaches GH¢285.9 Billion
The Ghana Stock Exchange ended the session with total market capitalization estimated at GH¢285.9 billion, equivalent to approximately US$25.4 billion.
The combination of strong year-to-date index gains, substantial market capitalization and increased trading volume underscores the scale of activity currently taking place on the local bourse.
However, the latest session also shows that the market is far from moving in one direction.
While seven equities gained, five declined, and the 19% drop in turnover despite a 47% jump in volume points to changing investor behaviour.
As September trading gets underway, investors will be watching closely to determine whether the GSE can sustain its impressive annual gains while overcoming recent short-term weakness.
