The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended the final weekday of trading on a stronger note, with the benchmark index staging a notable rebound despite recording losses across the week and the broader trading session witnessing a sharp decline in activity.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) climbed by 220.97 points, representing a 1.57% increase, to close at 14,309.49 points. The recovery offered some relief after a difficult stretch that left the index down 2.06% over the past week and 5.47% over the past four weeks.
Despite those recent losses, the market remains firmly ahead on a year-to-date basis, with the GSE-CI posting a 63.16% gain.
GSE Stages Late-Week Recovery
The latest session highlighted a striking contrast between price performance and trading activity.
A total of 2,901,726 shares changed hands, generating a market value of GH¢15.25 million. Compared with the previous trading session on Thursday, September 17, trading volume fell by 64%, while turnover dropped by 69%.
The decline in activity suggests that the market’s rebound in prices was not accompanied by the same level of trading intensity seen during the previous session.
Still, the session produced a balanced outcome among actively traded equities, with 27 listed companies participating in trading. Five stocks recorded gains, while another five ended the session lower.
That balance helped push the overall market into positive territory as investors responded to price movements across key counters.
SIC Insurance Leads Market Gainers
SIC Insurance Company emerged as the strongest gainer of the session, advancing 5.03% to close at GH¢5.43 per share.
The insurance company was followed by some of the market’s most closely watched stocks. MTN Ghana gained 2.92%, while Ecobank Ghana increased by 2.70%. GCB Bank also strengthened, rising 1.97%.
The performance of these major counters provided an important boost to the broader market and contributed to the sharp rise in the GSE-CI.
SIC Insurance’s 5.03% increase stood out among the day’s gainers, while the gains recorded by MTN Ghana, Ecobank Ghana and GCB Bank demonstrated that buying interest was not confined to a single sector.
The upward movement also comes against the backdrop of the GSE’s strong performance over the year, with the benchmark index still holding a gain of more than 63% since the beginning of 2026.
Digicut Leads Decliners
While several stocks strengthened, others came under pressure during the session.
Digicut Production & Advertising recorded the largest decline, falling 4.76% to close at GH¢0.40 per share.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin followed with a 2.46% decline, while Kasapreko fell 2.14%. Intravenous Infusions also ended lower, shedding 1.89%.
The presence of five gainers and five losers points to a market where investor activity remained selective rather than broadly directional.
Such movements can create sharp differences between individual stocks even when the wider market is posting a strong daily gain.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Volume
MTN Ghana was easily the most actively traded equity during the session, accounting for 2.06 million shares.
Ecobank Transnational followed with 280,653 shares, while Intravenous Infusions recorded 208,979 shares. Kasapreko completed the list of the most actively traded stocks with 126,115 shares.
MTN Ghana’s dominance in volume was particularly significant given that total market activity declined sharply from the previous session.
The telecommunications giant’s trading activity therefore accounted for a substantial portion of the day’s total volume, reinforcing its importance to overall market liquidity.
Financial Stocks Also Recover
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also ended the session higher, gaining 0.86% to close at 7,491.59 points.
However, similar to the benchmark index, the financial stocks gauge remains below its level from one week and four weeks earlier. The GSE-FSI recorded a one-week loss of 1.52% and a four-week decline of 5.47%.
Its year-to-date performance remains positive, with the index up 61.21%.
The simultaneous gains in the GSE-CI and GSE-FSI indicate that financial counters contributed to the broader market recovery, even as the recent weekly trend remains negative.
GSE Maintains Strong 2026 Gains
At the close of trading, the total market capitalization of the Ghana Stock Exchange stood at GH¢271.1 billion, equivalent to approximately US$23.5 billion.
The latest session therefore leaves investors with two contrasting signals. Daily price performance was firmly positive, but trading activity weakened considerably compared with the previous session.
Meanwhile, the market’s longer-term performance remains substantially stronger than its recent weekly and monthly movements.
With the GSE-CI still up 63.16% year-to-date and the GSE-FSI gaining 61.21% over the same period, the exchange continues to show strong cumulative growth despite the recent pullback.
The final weekday session ultimately delivered a welcome rebound, but the sharp decline in volume and turnover means the strength of the latest recovery will remain an important point to watch as trading resumes.
