The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has opened October on a distinctly negative footing, with key market indicators falling and trading activity weakening as investors began the new month on a cautious note.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI), the market’s broad benchmark, declined by 90.36 points, equivalent to 0.64%, to close at 14,051.20 points. The latest decline adds to the index’s recent losses, leaving it down 1.16% over the past week and 5.61% over the last four weeks.
Despite the recent pressure, the broader performance of the market remains firmly positive. The GSE-CI is still up 60.21% year-to-date, showing that the latest selloff has yet to erase the substantial gains accumulated during the year.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI), however, endured an even sharper decline during the session. The index fell 1.48% to 7,443.09 points, taking its one-week loss to 1.57% and its four-week decline to 5.31%. Its year-to-date return remains positive at 60.16%.
Trading activity loses momentum
The weakness was not limited to share prices. Trading activity also slowed considerably compared with the previous session.
A total of 3,034,021 shares changed hands during the session, generating a market value of GH¢18.81 million. Compared with Wednesday, September 30, trading volume declined by 41%, while turnover fell by 26%.
The drop in activity suggests that the opening session of October was marked by a combination of declining prices and reduced market participation. Investors appeared less willing to push trading volumes higher as selling pressure weighed on several listed equities.
The GSE’s overall market capitalisation stood at GH¢267.6 billion, equivalent to approximately US$22.8 billion.
While the market remains substantially larger than it was at the beginning of the year, the latest session highlights the volatility that can emerge even within a strongly performing annual market.
Six stocks fall as only two gain
The broader market performance reflected a clear imbalance between gainers and losers.
Of the 29 listed equities that participated in trading, only two recorded price gains, while six ended the session lower.
AngloGold Ashanti Depositary Shares emerged as the strongest gainer, rising 9.52%. CalBank also advanced, recording a 1.43% increase.
The gains, however, were outweighed by losses across several counters.
SIC Insurance Company suffered the day’s steepest decline, falling 9.79% to GH¢4.33 per share. Ecobank Transnational followed with a 6.94% drop, while Societe Generale Ghana declined 3.47%.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin also came under pressure, losing 2.61% by the close of trading.
The sharp movement in SIC Insurance was particularly notable, highlighting how individual counters can experience significant price swings even when the broader market remains substantially positive on a year-to-date basis.
MTN Ghana dominates market activity
While several stocks recorded losses, MTN Ghana remained the dominant counter in terms of trading volume.
The telecommunications giant recorded 2.67 million traded shares, accounting for the overwhelming share of total market volume during the session.
Ecobank Transnational followed with 95,539 shares, while Kasapreko recorded 91,287 shares. CalBank completed the leading group with 90,283 traded shares.
MTN Ghana’s trading dominance demonstrates the continuing importance of highly liquid counters to activity on the local bourse. Its substantial volume also means that movements in a small number of heavily traded equities can have a considerable influence on overall market activity.
Strong annual gains face a tougher October
The opening session presents an interesting contrast for the GSE.
On one hand, the market continues to carry substantial gains accumulated since the beginning of the year. The GSE Composite Index remains up 60.21%, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index has gained 60.16%.
On the other hand, both indices have experienced notable losses over shorter periods. The GSE-CI has declined 5.61% over four weeks, while the GSE-FSI has shed 5.31% during the same period.
That divergence puts the October performance into perspective. The market has not suddenly erased its strong annual gains, but recent trading has become considerably more challenging.
The latest session also shows how quickly sentiment can shift across individual stocks. While AngloGold Ashanti Depositary Shares gained nearly 10%, SIC Insurance lost almost the same proportion in the opposite direction.
As October trading gets underway, investors will be watching whether the recent weakness develops into a prolonged correction or whether the market can regain momentum after the sharp gains recorded earlier in the year.
The combination of falling indices, lower turnover and weaker participation gives the new month a cautious opening, even as the GSE enters October with one of its strongest year-to-date performances in recent years.
