The Ghana Bauxite Company Ltd (GBC) has entered into a major $250-million funding agreement with Ecobank Ghana to fund the enterprise’s expansion strategy and overhaul its mining facilities at Awaso in the Western Region.

This agreement is geared toward bolstering overall production output while giving a crucial push to Ghana’s long-term plan of refining bauxite domestically.

Under the terms of the financial setup, Ecobank Ghana takes on the position of exclusive mandated arranger, charged with structuring the multi-million-dollar funding arrangement and orchestrating participation from additional domestic and global financial organizations.

The dual term loan and revolving credit facility will provide capital expenditure and operational funding to upgrade mining infrastructure, boost transport capacities, and drive operational effectiveness.

Currently, GBC operates under joint ownership, with Ofori-Poku Company Limited (OPCL) holding an 80 per cent majority share and the Government of Ghana retaining a 20 per cent stake via the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC).

“The decision now is a quantum leap; the subsistence mentality is no more. We want to make giant strides in terms of investment in logistics and equipment as we move to have a fully integrated aluminium industry in Ghana.”

Operational Growth and Mine Upgrades

Speaking on behalf of the company during the signing ceremony in Accra, the Executive Chairman of GBC, Mr. Ofori-Poku, outlined how current leadership worked aggressively to move bauxite extraction figures upward from 700,000 tonnes in 2022 to 2.7 million tonnes in 2025.

He added that “as of October this year, we have already done 2.6 million and projects to hit at least three million tonnes by the end of the year,” proving the company’s capability to scale up operations rapidly.

To maintain this growth momentum, GBC is shifting focus toward establishing globally competitive operational frameworks.

Mr. Ofori-Poku stressed that for GBC, the main challenge going forward is no longer simply about extracting higher mineral quantities, but rather “how to mine, handle, transport, process and deliver significantly higher volumes of material reliably and at a globally competitive cost.”

The Integrated Aluminium Value Chain

The primary imperative driving this multi-million-dollar commitment lies in Ghana’s strategic goal to establish a fully integrated domestic bauxite and aluminium industrial sector.

Although the nation has actively extracted raw bauxite at Awaso for decades, it lacks an operational domestic alumina refinery, forcing it to export raw, unprocessed mineral wealth.

This capital injection directly addresses that historical gap by establishing the production and infrastructure groundwork needed to feed a planned domestic alumina refinery at Awaso.

Building robust mining capacities ensures that when the refining facilities come online, a steady, reliable raw material supply will already be secured.

Mr. Ofori-Poku noted that “our responsibility is to demonstrate that Ghanaian businesses can do more than participate in the extraction of our natural resources,” emphasizing that local firms “can build and manage the industrial platforms required to transform those resources into lasting economic value.”

Financial Partnerships and Capital Mobilisation

Highlighting the scope of the banking collaboration, the Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana, Ms. Abena Osei-Poku, stated that “transformative projects require more than capital; they require financial expertise, the ability to bring institutions and investors together, and partners who understand both the opportunity and the responsibility that come with delivering at scale”.

She noted that “Africa’s ambitions must be matched by Africa’s capacity to mobilise capital and build partnerships that enable sustainable growth,” reinforcing how the deal aligns with Ecobank’s wider mission across its 34 sub-Saharan African markets and international offices.

By leveraging its extensive pan-African footprint, Ecobank aims to connect high-impact regional extractive initiatives with the necessary debt capital, ensuring Ghanaian natural resources yield sustainable economic returns.
