Ghana’s rich cultural heritage took centre stage in the Russian capital this week as President John Dramani Mahama visited an exhibition dedicated to the country’s iconic kente textile. The display, titled Woven Meanings, is being held at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts in Moscow and forms part of the cultural programme linked to the Third Russia-Africa Summit.

The exhibition highlights the history, craftsmanship and symbolism of kente, one of Ghana’s most recognisable traditional textiles. Organised with the participation of the Centre for Public Diplomacy and the Russian House of the Centre for Public Diplomacy in Ghana, it also involves the Russia-Ghana Parliamentary Forum, the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) and Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry. The event is connected to the International Festival of African Culture and Cinema under the theme Africa: Together into the Future.

During his tour on Thursday, President Mahama viewed samples of the vibrant, handwoven cloth, a traditional weaving loom of the type still used by artisans in the Kumasi area, and two historically significant pieces. One is a kente cloak associated with Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

About Kente

Kente is far more than fabric. Its intricate geometric patterns and bold colour combinations carry specific meanings, communicating historical narratives, social values, proverbs and cultural traditions. Knowledge of the craft has been passed down through generations of skilled weavers, primarily from the Ashanti region.

In 2024, the traditional craftsmanship of kente weaving was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further elevating its global status.

The exhibition also explores the textile’s contemporary relevance, showing how traditional techniques continue to influence modern fashion, design and cultural expression. Russian-language explanatory materials, including information on Adinkra symbols, have made the displays accessible to local visitors and helped bridge understanding between the two cultures.

President Mahama used the occasion to stress the importance of cultural exchange in building lasting international relationships.

“Although we have established intergovernmental contacts and relations between our two countries, the strongest and most enduring ties are those between people. And these ties can only be strengthened through an understanding of each other’s cultures.”

He expressed appreciation to the organisers and partners for bringing Ghana’s heritage to Moscow and noted the strong public interest.

Museum director Tatyana Rybkina reported that more than 11,000 people had visited the exhibition in less than two weeks, a figure President Mahama also referenced during his remarks.

Dmitry Savelyev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Director General of the Centre for Public Diplomacy, highlighted the historical foundations of Russia-Ghana relations, including educational links dating back to the Soviet era.

The visit forms part of a broader programme of engagements for President Mahama in Moscow. He arrived in the Russian capital to participate in the Third Russia-Africa Summit hosted by President Vladimir Putin.

Alongside official summit sessions and a scheduled bilateral meeting with the Russian leader, the Ghanaian president is also set to receive honorary doctorate degrees from two Russian universities: the Russian University of Transport and the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.

Cultural Diplomacy

Cultural diplomacy has long been recognised as a powerful complement to political and economic cooperation. By presenting kente on an international platform, Ghana is sharing a story of identity, history, ingenuity and the resilience of artisans who have sustained one of Africa’s most distinctive weaving traditions.

For Russian audiences, the exhibition offers a tangible introduction to Ghanaian creativity and values beyond formal government interactions.

The strong attendance figures and the presence of high-level Ghanaian and Russian officials demonstrate the appetite for such exchanges. Organisers hope the display will not only celebrate Ghana’s textile heritage but also encourage further people-to-people connections, trade in cultural goods and mutual appreciation between the two nations.

As the Woven Meanings exhibition continues, it stands as a vivid illustration of how traditional craftsmanship can serve modern diplomacy. For Ghana, it is an opportunity to project soft power and national pride on a global stage.

For visitors in Moscow, it provides a colourful window into a living African cultural tradition that continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in its historical origins.
