Burkina Faso’s Minister for Industry, Commerce and Crafts, Hon. Serge Gnaidem Poda, has commended the quality, creativity and cultural significance of Ghanaian handicrafts following a visit to the Ghana Village Pavilion at the 18th International Arts and Handicraft Trade Show of Ouagadougou (SIAO 2026).

The visit, undertaken on Monday, November 2, 2026, ahead of Ghana Day celebrations scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, provided an opportunity for the Burkinabe minister to appreciate Ghana’s traditional craftsmanship and the diversity of locally produced artefacts being exhibited at the international trade fair.

Hon. Poda, accompanied by officials from his ministry and traditional rulers, was received by Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso, H.E. Kenneth Akibate, who highlighted the significance of Ghana’s participation in the exhibition and its broader contribution to promoting the country’s cultural identity and economic interests.

The minister’s visit underscores the growing importance of cultural exhibitions as platforms for strengthening relations between African countries while creating opportunities for artisans to access international markets.

Ghanaian Craftsmanship Attracts Recognition

During the tour, Hon. Poda expressed admiration for the artistic presentation, diversity and craftsmanship reflected in the Ghanaian products, recognising their contribution to preserving cultural heritage and promoting indigenous creative industries.

The Ghana Village Pavilion provides an exhibition space for local artisans to showcase products that represent the country’s different cultural traditions, artistic expressions and indigenous production techniques.

Ghanaian handicrafts form part of a broader creative economy that offers opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, export diversification and income generation, particularly among small-scale producers and traditional craft communities.

“Ghanaian handicrafts were gaining popularity due to their unique designs, craftsmanship and cultural significance.”

The growing international interest in these products reinforces the importance of platforms such as SIAO, where artisans can engage with prospective buyers, establish business relationships and explore opportunities beyond their domestic markets.

SIAO Creates International Market Opportunities

Ghana’s participation in the exhibition comes at a time when African countries are increasingly exploring ways to transform traditional craftsmanship into commercially competitive industries.

The Ghana, Burkina Faso Target Industrial Trade Growth, which runs from October 30 to November 8, 2026, in Ouagadougou, is being held under the theme, “African Handicrafts and Industrialisation: What Synergy for Better Organisation and Promotion of Local Products and Cultural Heritage?”

The biennial exhibition brings together artisans, manufacturers, institutional representatives, international buyers and other industry stakeholders to promote African handicrafts through exhibitions, commercial engagements, professional meetings and cultural activities.

The event’s focus on industrialisation is particularly significant because it addresses the need to move traditional craft production beyond small-scale activities towards more organised and competitive businesses.

The exhibition also provides a platform for buyers to identify products with commercial potential while allowing participating countries to exchange experiences on developing their creative industries.

According to the Ghana, Burkina Faso Target Industrial Trade Growthorganisers, the exhibition has evolved into an important continental marketplace since its establishment in 1988, with its activities combining product exhibitions, business-to-business engagements, workshops and cultural performances.

“The vision is to make our handicrafts progress gradually towards industrialisation,’’ he stated

This industrialisation agenda highlights the need for African countries to connect traditional knowledge with modern production systems, particularly in areas such as product finishing, packaging, quality assurance, branding and market access.

Ghana Positions Culture for Economic Gains

Earlier, Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, encouraged participants and visitors to explore the Ghana Village Pavilion and experience the country’s cultural identity through its traditional crafts and artefacts.

Her appeal forms part of Ghana’s broader participation strategy, which seeks to use the international exhibition not only to showcase cultural heritage but also to strengthen the commercial visibility of locally manufactured products.

Ghana’s designation as the country of honour at the 2026 exhibition provides an additional opportunity to highlight its creative industries and position local artisans before a wider international audience.

The Ghana Day celebrations on Tuesday, November 3, are expected to further spotlight the country’s cultural contributions and strengthen engagement with visitors, institutional representatives and potential business partners.

Beyond the exhibition, the commercial prospects of Ghanaian handicrafts depend on the industry’s ability to translate international recognition into sustained orders, investment and stronger export relationships.

This requires coordinated efforts among government institutions, export promotion agencies, industry associations and private-sector operators to support artisans with market intelligence, financing, production equipment and access to international buyers.

“The genuine independence of a country is also built in our workshops, our fields, our factories and through the daily choices of our consumers.”

Minister for Trade, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare

The recognition of Ghanaian craftsmanship by the Burkinabe minister therefore adds to the diplomatic and commercial significance of the country’s participation in the exhibition.

As Ghana prepares for its dedicated celebration, the engagement presents an opportunity to strengthen cultural connections with Burkina Faso while advancing the visibility of Ghanaian artisans and their products in regional and international markets.
