Amazon has announced that Darlington will host the first UK flights of its Prime Air drone delivery service, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion into autonomous delivery systems.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, is being celebrated as a major achievement for the region, with Tees Valley’s Tory mayor, Lord Ben Houchen, at the forefront of the initiative.
The service, which has been operational in the United States since 2022, promises same-day 30-minute deliveries from Amazon’s Darlington fulfillment center directly to customers’ homes. This innovation is expected to not only revolutionize delivery logistics but also boost local economic growth.
Lord Houchen, who spearheaded an 18-month campaign to secure the project, expressed his excitement over the development.
“I am delighted that Teesside will become home to Amazon’s first UK drone delivery service, In Teesside, we do things differently. We say yes when others say it’s too difficult.”

Lord Houchen also emphasized the region’s commitment to embracing technological advancements.
“We have worked tirelessly with Amazon to bring this UK first to Teesside, which will support high-quality jobs, deliver vital multi-million-pound investment in our local economy, and drive growth across Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool.”

Planning permission and authorization from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) are now being sought to pave the way for the lightweight drone delivery service. Once approved, Amazon will begin recruiting team members and constructing flight operation facilities at the Darlington site.
Building the Future of Delivery
Teesside International Airport has played a crucial role in supporting the rollout of Prime Air, providing advice on air operations, and collaborating closely with Amazon’s team.
An Amazon spokesperson highlighted the company’s commitment to ensuring safety and reliability as they introduce this cutting-edge technology to the UK. “We are ready and excited to make drone delivery a reality for our UK customers,” they said.
“We have built safe and reliable drone delivery services elsewhere in the world in close partnership with regulators and the communities we serve, and we are working to do the same in the UK.”

The spokesperson also noted that Amazon is engaging with the Darlington community to address concerns and gather feedback while continuing to work with the CAA to develop a regulatory framework for commercial drone operations.
The decision to launch Prime Air in Darlington is seen as evidence of the region’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation and technological advancement.
Lord Houchen underscored the importance of seizing opportunities in the fast-moving tech landscape.
“The world is moving at pace – and if we don’t keep up, we will be left behind. If you’re not first, you’re last.”

With plans underway to establish the necessary infrastructure and regulatory approvals, the project is poised to bring high-quality jobs and significant investment to the area, further cementing Teesside’s position on the global stage.
As the community awaits the rollout of Prime Air, Amazon’s ambitious drone delivery service is set to redefine convenience and efficiency, potentially setting a new standard for the future of logistics in the UK.
