The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor (MP), has called for decisive and collective action to boost Ghana’s oil production and strengthen the institutional performance of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
Speaking during a working visit to the Corporation’s headquarters at Petroleum House in Tema, the Minister emphasized that Ghana’s energy future hinges on the capacity and resilience of its national oil company.
“The task ahead is urgent.
“We need to grow production, expand our capacity, and do what it takes to strengthen GNPC’s leadership in the sector. That’s a shared responsibility.”

The visit formed part of the Minister’s familiarization tour of key energy institutions, designed to align strategic priorities and inspire collaboration toward achieving national energy objectives.
The visit began with a high-level closed-door meeting between the Minister, GNPC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Kwame Ntow Amoah, and the Corporation’s Executive Committee.
Discussions focused on ongoing upstream projects, Ghana’s oil and gas outlook, and how GNPC’s strategic goals could align more closely with the Ministry’s evolving policy framework.
The session underscored the Ministry’s determination to ensure that GNPC not only maintains its operational efficiency but also takes a central role in driving Ghana’s transition to a sustainable and secure energy future.
After the meeting, Hon. Jinapor addressed the broader GNPC staff, commending their commitment and expertise while urging renewed energy and innovation in tackling the country’s energy challenges.
He assured staff of the Ministry’s full support, pledging to reinforce GNPC’s position as the “catalyst for Ghana’s energy future.”
Acknowledging Progress and Challenges in the Oil and Gas Sector

Hon. Jinapor acknowledged the challenges currently facing Ghana’s oil production, including declining output from mature fields and delays in bringing new projects on stream.
However, he expressed optimism that with effective collaboration and innovation, production levels could rebound strongly.
“GNPC’s performance is crucial to national energy security. We must work together to strengthen capacity, accelerate field development, and enhance efficiency.”

The Minister also highlighted GNPC’s role in ensuring fuel security and power stability, especially through the reliable provision of natural gas to feed Ghana’s growing power generation network.
He revealed that Ghana had recently recorded a new peak in electricity consumption approximately 4,080 megawatts, a milestone reflecting both economic growth and rising household demand.
“This peak demonstrates the scale of responsibility that rests on GNPC and the energy sector as a whole.
“Stable gas supply underpins power generation, and by extension, the stability of our economy.”

Minister Commends GNPC Leadership and Staff

In his remarks, Acting CEO Kwame Ntow Amoah expressed appreciation for the Minister’s visit, describing him as a “dependable ally and guide” whose leadership continues to shape GNPC’s direction.
He credited Hon. Jinapor with helping stabilize the Corporation’s governance and ensuring consistency in gas supply management.
Mr. Amoah reaffirmed GNPC’s commitment to the national agenda, pledging that the Corporation would continue to drive upstream growth while supporting Ghana’s green transition objectives.
Hon. Jinapor, in turn, commended the GNPC team for their technical expertise and dedication to service. “Your work matters,” he said, encouraging staff to maintain high standards of professionalism and innovation. “Let’s keep building. Let’s make GNPC proud. And let’s make Ghana proud,” he added.
Advancing Ghana’s Energy Transition and EV Adoption
The Minister’s message extended beyond oil and gas production to address Ghana’s broader energy transition agenda.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to a “just and sustainable transition” that balances the responsible use of hydrocarbons with the expansion of renewable energy and clean technologies.
Highlighting Ghana’s leadership in Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption, Hon. Jinapor revealed that the country currently registers the highest number of EVs on the road in Africa.
He disclosed that government has approved EVs for all Ministers and plans to extend this to Chief Executives as part of a broader clean transport strategy.

He further explained that a phased approach is being implemented to make EVs more accessible and affordable for public servants, with an emphasis on powering them through solar energy systems to ensure zero-carbon transport.
“The Ministry’s mandate is not just about managing oil and gas; it’s about steering Ghana’s energy transformation responsibly.
“We must strike the right balance between leveraging our hydrocarbon wealth and preparing for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.”

Hon. Jinapor expressed deep appreciation for the dedication of GNPC staff and reaffirmed his Ministry’s unwavering support for their mission.
He described the Corporation as “the backbone of Ghana’s energy sector”, urging employees to remain steadfast in driving national progress.
The Minister’s visit forms part of a broader strategy by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to realign the country’s energy institutions, promote cleaner technologies, and ensure Ghana remains both energy-secure and globally competitive in the transition to a low-carbon future.
