The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, have announced a series of interim measures aimed at improving electricity supply reliability in the Volta and Oti Regions. The move follows persistent challenges linked to the absence of a dedicated transmission line serving the two regions.

In a statement issued by the Corporate Communications Department of GRIDCo, the power sector agencies acknowledged the historical nature of the supply difficulties and assured residents that steps are being taken to stabilise the system while longer-term infrastructure solutions are pursued.

“The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has noted with concern the challenges associated with power supply in the Volta and Oti Regions.”

This structural gap has made the electricity supply vulnerable to instability, especially during periods of high demand or system stress.

The statement explained that a long-term plan to construct a dedicated transmission line is currently being pursued to provide a sustainable solution.

However, recognising the urgency of the situation, the ministry has approved immediate interventions designed to bring relief to consumers while work on the permanent transmission infrastructure continues.

Planned Outage to Enable Load Redistribution

As part of the interim measures, GRIDCo and ECG have scheduled a temporary interruption of power supply at the Asiekpe Substation to allow engineers to undertake a critical load redistribution exercise.

The planned outage is set for Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

“Interruption of power supply has been scheduled at the Asiekpe Substation… to enable engineers carry out a load redistribution exercise at the station.”

Load redistribution involves balancing electricity demand across different feeders and substations to reduce pressure on overstretched components of the network.

Power sector experts say such exercises are essential in areas where infrastructure constraints exist, as they help prevent system overloads and unplanned outages.

GRIDCo and ECG are confident that the exercise will yield tangible improvements in electricity reliability across the affected regions.

“The load redistribution exercise is expected to significantly improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply to consumers in the Volta and Oti Regions.”

The intervention is part of a broader strategy by power sector stakeholders to optimise existing infrastructure while investments in new transmission assets are being developed.

Communities to Be Affected During the Exercise

During the six-hour maintenance window, power supply will be temporarily interrupted in several communities connected to the Asiekpe Substation. These include Ho, Asiekpe, Sogakope, Kpeve, Kpando, Kadjebi and surrounding towns.

GRIDCo and ECG urged residents and businesses in the affected areas to take the necessary precautions to minimise disruption during the outage period.

“The power sector stakeholders have put in place all necessary measures to ensure that the work is completed within the planned timeframe to minimise inconvenience to consumers.”

Engineers will be on standby throughout the exercise to address any unforeseen technical challenges and restore supply promptly once the work is completed.

The agencies stressed that the planned outage is a proactive step to prevent more frequent and unpredictable disruptions in the future.

“GRIDCo and ECG sincerely apologise to all affected customers for any inconvenience this planned outage may cause and thank the public for their patience and cooperation.”

As Ghana continues to strengthen its power infrastructure, authorities say interim interventions such as load redistribution remain crucial in ensuring reliable electricity supply, particularly in regions awaiting major transmission investments.
