Former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos has opened up on his decision to retire from professional football early in his career, insisting he stepped away at exactly the right moment despite widespread belief that he still had more to offer the game.
Speaking at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, the ex-die Mannschaft midfielder revealed he has never considered reversing his decision since calling time on his career in 2024.
“Did I think about coming out of retirement? No. I stopped the way I wanted to. I closed the book. Even if I wanted to return, I always thought it’d be impossible to retire in a better way than I did.”

The 36-year-old brought an end to a decorated career shortly after helping Madrid secure their 15th UEFA Champions League title in 2024.

He then featured for the German national football team at UEFA Euro 2024, where they exited at the quarter-final stage following a defeat to Spain.
Legacy Over Longevity
Kroos explained that his departure from Madrid and the sport was a deliberate move aimed at preserving his legacy at the highest level. “Why did I leave Real Madrid like that? I wanted my word to mean something,” he added.
The German midfielder enjoyed a glittering career spanning close to two decade at the top level, winning six Uefa Champions League titles—five with Real Madrid and one with Bayern Munich.
He also played a pivotal role in Germany’s triumph at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, helping his country secure their fourth world title after beating Argentina in the final.

In addition to his European success, Kroos lifted multiple domestic league titles in both Germany and Spain, establishing himself as one of the most consistent and technically gifted midfielders of his generation.
His retirement, however, sparked debate across the football world, with many suggesting he could have extended his career given his sustained level of performance. Known for his composure, passing accuracy, and ability to dictate the tempo of matches, Kroos showed little sign of decline even in his final season.
Since his departure, Los Blancos have found it difficult to replace his influence in midfield, particularly his ability to control games under pressure and manage possession in crucial moments. Despite the external noise, Kroos remains resolute that his decision was the right one, emphasizing that leaving at his peak was always part of the plan.
His stance highlights a rare approach in modern football, where players often prolong their careers well beyond their prime. For Kroos, the focus was not on extending his time in the game, but on ensuring he exited on his own terms, with his legacy intact.
