Dennis Miracle Aboagye, aide to New Patriotic Party flagbearer and former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has denied that the Economic and Organised Crime Office ever questioned him about the GHC55 million at the centre of an ongoing investigation, following his release after four days in detention.
In a statement issued after his release, Aboagye insisted that no such conversation took place during his time with EOCO, directly countering assumptions that had circulated about the nature of his questioning. “For the records, there was no discussion of any GHC55 million cedis with me by EOCO. None,” he said.
Aboagye revealed that his detention began just one day after he declared his intention to serve the NPP as National Communications Director, a coincidence he suggested carried political significance. He described his four days in EOCO custody as an attempt to intimidate him that ultimately failed.
“Four days ago, just one day after I declared my intention to serve our great party as National Communications Director, I was picked up and detained by EOCO. A false narrative was put out about my arrest, but Ghanaians are not fools, and neither are the good people of the New Patriotic Party. The facts and the truth will prevail,” he said.

The Investigation Behind His Detention
Although Aboagye denied being questioned about the GHC55 million sum directly, his detention falls within a broader EOCO investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation, where he previously served as Executive Secretary under the name Dennis Edward Aboagye, popularly known as Miracles.
According to background details on the case, the investigation centres on the alleged misappropriation, diversion and theft of GH¢55 million in public funds, with the infractions said to have occurred during his tenure at IMCCoD. The probe draws on findings from a forensic audit covering the period between August 1, 2022, and February 2, 2025.
EOCO has stated that the suspected offences under investigation include conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. The committee’s former accountant, Gerald Appiah, was also arrested in connection with the case and has reportedly begun voluntarily refunding some of the state funds involved.
Aboagye’s detention began upon his return to the country, when immigration officials executed a stop order on the night of Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Accra International Airport. He was formally handed over to EOCO the following morning to assist with searches of his residence, a process that extended into the days that followed his arrival.

During his detention, Aboagye said he remained aware of the demonstrations that took place in his support, with NPP supporters gathering outside EOCO’s headquarters in Accra to demand his release. He credited these protests with sustaining his morale throughout the ordeal.
“To every party faithful who hit the streets, who raised their voices, who refused to be silent, I saw you. I heard you. From my detention, word of your protests reached me, and it kept my spirit standing tall. You did not just defend Dennis Miracles Aboagye; you defended the principle that no voice can be intimidated into silence”.

The protests grew significant enough that the Ghana Police Service deployed a Formed Police Unit to secure the area around EOCO’s offices, as dozens of angry supporters massed outside demanding his immediate release.
Aboagye’s arrest drew strong condemnation from senior NPP officials. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and other party leaders described the operation as political persecution and an intimidation tactic, a characterisation that aligned closely with Aboagye’s own account of events following his release.
This backlash from party leadership shaped much of the public discourse surrounding his detention, with many within the NPP framing the episode as evidence of what they describe as targeted action against opposition figures ahead of internal party appointments.
Vows to Take Up Communications Role
Despite the disruption caused by his detention, Aboagye reaffirmed his intention to assume the role of National Communications Director for the NPP, insisting that the experience had strengthened rather than weakened his resolve.
“Let me be clear, if the intention was to break me, it has failed. If the intention was to scare me, it has failed spectacularly. I will lead the New Patriotic Party’s Communications Directorate to command the narrative, and no cell, no false story, no intimidation will change that.”

He added that the ordeal had only intensified his determination, describing it as fuel added to the fire.
