The Volta Regional Minister, Honourable James Gunu has assured residents of the region that all 24-hour economy market projects underway across the region will be completed before the end of President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure. He stated that construction has commenced in all 18 municipal and district assemblies, describing the projects as a major step towards expanding trade, creating jobs and improving local infrastructure.

Addressing the progress of the initiative, Honourable Gunu disclosed that contractors have already taken possession of every project site across the region. He indicated that work is progressing simultaneously in all districts following the sod cutting ceremony that officially launched the programme.

“We have introduced contractors to every site and they are all working. Before the President’s tenure ends, every promise we have made to the people of the Volta Region will be fulfilled.”

Furthermore, the Volta Regional Minister explained that the projects are expected to reach completion by the end of 2028. He argued that the construction schedule provides adequate time for contractors to deliver quality facilities that will serve communities for many years.

Discussing the scale of the development, Honourable Gunu revealed that the market planned for Ho will operate as a modern commercial hub with several public services housed within the complex. He said the facility will include shops, pharmacies, a Women’s Bank branch, a police station, a fire station and a kindergarten to support traders and visitors.

According to the Regional Minister, the Ho project has been designed as a multipurpose market capable of matching some of Ghana’s leading commercial centres. In his view, the development demonstrates government’s determination to strengthen economic activity across the Volta Region through modern infrastructure.

In addition, Honourable Gunu distinguished the proposed Ho market from the planned Aflao market project, explaining that the two developments serve different purposes. He clarified that the Aflao project falls outside the 24 hour economy market programme although government continues to advance preparations for its construction.

The Volta Regional Minister further disclosed that feasibility studies and engineering designs for the Aflao market have been completed while access to the site has already been secured. He added that the procurement process is underway to select a contractor who will execute the project and expand commercial opportunities within the municipality.

From his perspective, the market projects represent a long term investment that will strengthen local businesses and improve trading conditions throughout the Volta Region. Honourable Gunu affirmed that government remains focused on delivering every commitment made to residents as work continues across all project sites.

Government To Compensate Akosombo Dam Spillage Victims

The Volta Regional Minister, Honourable James Gunu also disclosed that government is preparing to compensate more than 12,000 victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage while intensifying efforts to develop tourism infrastructure across the Volta Region. He said the verified data has been submitted for processing as government also works to improve access to key tourist destinations that can attract domestic and international visitors.

Addressing the compensation process, Honourable Gunu explained that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Finance Minister to release funds for payments to begin. He added that the disbursement will commence immediately after the funds become available, bringing relief to thousands of affected residents.

“The verified data has been submitted and the President has directed the Finance Minister to release the funds. Once the money is released, payment will be made to the victims.”

According to the Volta Regional Minister, more than 12,000 people have been identified through the verification exercise carried out after the disaster. He indicated that government intends to support every genuine victim, with additional payments expected to continue if the entire exercise extends beyond the current year.

Furthermore, Honourable Gunu acknowledged that many affected families continue to face difficult living conditions following the flooding. Nevertheless, he affirmed that the verification exercise was necessary to ensure only eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance when the programme begins.

Turning to tourism development, the Regional Minister revealed that officials have identified more than 120 tourism sites across the Volta Region for possible investment. He explained that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts is collaborating with the Regional Coordinating Council to prioritise locations capable of generating economic activity.

Discussing the strategy, Honourable Gunu stated that government’s immediate responsibility is to improve infrastructure around the identified destinations. He noted that better roads, electricity and other public services are expected to encourage private investors to develop tourism facilities across the region.

In addition, the Regional Minister highlighted Tafi Atome as one of the sites that already benefits from an improved road network. He also referred to Mount Afadjato and the route in neighboring towns, where sections of the road have been upgraded while work continues on areas that still require rehabilitation.

“Tourism grows when investors can reach the sites with ease. That is why roads and electricity remain central to our development strategy.”

Honourable James Gunu

Moreover, Honourable Gunu explained that infrastructure upgrades will improve visitor experiences while creating opportunities for businesses in surrounding communities. He added that government remains committed to partnering with the private sector to unlock the region’s tourism potential through sustained investment.
