Ghana Water Apologises for Supply Disruptions Amid National Power Outage

Ghana Water Company Limited

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has apologised to customers nationwide for ongoing disruptions to water supply, explaining that the interruptions stem directly from the national power outage currently affecting the Ghana Grid Company’s (GRIDCo) transmission system.

In a statement issued, GWL said the challenges on the National Interconnected Transmission System have adversely affected operations at several of its water treatment plants and pumping stations across the country, leaving many facilities unable to function normally.

According to the statement, the vast majority of GWL’s water production systems rely on electricity supplied through the national grid to operate, meaning the ongoing power challenges have had an almost immediate knock-on effect on the company’s ability to deliver services.

“As a result of the power supply interruptions, most of GWL’s water production systems, which rely on electricity supplied through the national grid, are not operational. Consequently, the Company is currently unable to produce and distribute potable water to customers in the affected areas.”

The disruption comes as GRIDCo continues efforts to restore power following a nationwide blackout, underscoring how closely intertwined Ghana’s water supply system remains with the stability of the national electricity grid.

Management of Ghana Water Ltd was direct in acknowledging the inconvenience the outage has caused customers, while emphasising that the root cause of the disruption lies outside the company’s own operations.

The company’s framing places responsibility for the disruption squarely on the broader power sector challenges currently facing the country, rather than any operational shortfall within its own treatment or distribution systems.

Technical Teams on Standby for Swift Recovery

GWL sought to reassure the public that it remains prepared to resume normal operations as soon as conditions allow, stating that its technical teams are on standby and ready to restart production and distribution immediately once a stable electricity supply is restored to affected treatment plants and pumping stations.

“Management of Ghana Water Ltd sincerely apologizes to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused by this unfortunate situation, which is beyond our control.”

The company added that its management is working closely with relevant power sector institutions and closely monitoring the situation, an indication that GWL is coordinating directly with GRIDCo and other stakeholders to track progress on the broader grid restoration effort rather than waiting passively for supply to return.

The disruption to water services adds to the wider fallout from the ongoing national power outage, which has already prompted GRIDCo to mobilise efforts to restore electricity supply across the country.

GWL’s statement suggests that the pace of its own recovery will depend heavily on how quickly grid stability is re-established nationally, rather than on any independent timeline the water utility can control unilaterally.

Call for Patience as Updates Continue

Closing its statement, Ghana Water Ltd appealed to customers for continued patience and understanding as the company works through the disruption, while committing to keep the public informed as circumstances evolve.

The statement was issued under the authority of Stanley Martey, Chief Manager for Public Relations and Communications at Ghana Water Ltd, who was listed as the designated contact for further enquiries.

With the timeline for full grid restoration still unclear, affected customers across the country are likely to continue experiencing intermittent water supply until GRIDCo confirms a return to stable electricity distribution.
