France’s new Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu

France’s new Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu.

French Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu has pledged €12 million in immediate assistance to communities affected by last month’s devastating wildfires, promising support for reconstruction, housing and businesses as authorities begin assessing the longer-term consequences of the disaster.

Speaking during a visit to the Gironde and Landes departments, two of the areas hardest hit by the fires, Lecornu said that the government would help affected residents secure insurance payments and take action against companies that deliberately delay claims.

He also promised to accelerate planning procedures so that damaged properties could be rebuilt as quickly as possible, while providing tax and social contribution relief to businesses affected by the fires. Lecornu said that the French state would work to rehouse people whose homes were destroyed or damaged and ensure that reconstruction did not become trapped in lengthy administrative procedures.

The government’s immediate financial support is intended to assist communities as they move from emergency response to recovery. The Prime Minister also said that authorities would intervene where insurance disputes or delays prevent residents from receiving compensation for their losses.

His visit comes after wildfires swept through parts of southwestern France last month, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate and destroying homes, businesses and large areas of forest. Authorities have been facing pressure to explain how firefighting resources were deployed during the crisis and whether some communities received adequate protection.

Beyond the immediate recovery effort, Lecornu warned that the destruction of vegetation could create additional dangers in the coming months, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. “Our disaster can herald another,” he said, referring to the possibility of flooding during the autumn and winter. The destruction of forests and vegetation can leave soil more exposed to rainfall and increase the risk of erosion and rapid water runoff.

Lecornu said that he had asked authorities to examine the issue and prepare measures to reduce the potential impact. His warning highlights the broader consequences of the wildfires, which extend beyond the immediate damage caused by flames. Authorities are now having to consider how the loss of vegetation could affect local communities as weather conditions change.

Lecornu’s visit was also marked by visible anger from some residents in Le Porge, one of the towns affected by the fires in Gironde. A group of residents booed the prime minister as he arrived for a meeting with local officials.

Some residents expressed frustration over the government’s handling of the disaster and the subsequent recovery process. Lecornu later left the town without holding an open meeting with residents, according to reports. Some locals described his departure as disrespectful and placed an empty chair as a symbol of his absence.

The Prime Minister’s office, however, said he had spoken with affected residents and farmers during the visit. Lecornu subsequently travelled to Mérignac, where he met local officials and addressed concerns surrounding the response to the fires.

Lecornu Rejects Claims Of Unequal Protection

The government’s handling of the fires has become a source of controversy in the affected region. Some residents have alleged that firefighting efforts prioritised the upscale Cap-Ferret peninsula, a popular holiday destination for wealthy Parisians, over residential areas where local communities were at risk.

Lecornu rejected such claims and defended the way firefighting decisions were made during the emergency. “We have absolutely nothing to hide regarding how fire protection operations have been conducted over the past few weeks,” he said.

He argued that decisions about where to deploy firefighting resources were made locally and based on the circumstances confronting emergency services at the time. According to Lecornu, the response involved a “very, very decentralised tactical approach to decision-making,” meaning that operational decisions were largely taken by authorities and emergency officials on the ground.

He also criticised what he described as “conspiracy” theories that had emerged following the fires, arguing that they risked obscuring the facts surrounding the emergency response.

The government’s focus is now shifting towards rebuilding affected communities while preparing for the possibility of further climate-related risks. The €12 million aid package will provide immediate assistance, while measures involving housing, insurance, taxation and business contributions are intended to support longer-term recovery.

The political tensions surrounding Lecornu’s visit also demonstrate the challenges facing the French government as it responds to the aftermath of one of the country’s most damaging recent wildfire episodes. With reconstruction expected to take time and concerns growing over possible flooding later in the year, authorities face the dual task of helping communities recover while preparing them for further weather-related risks.
