Private Sector Swallows 96% of Bank Credit

Ghana’s banking sector has unleashed a powerful wave of lending into the economy, with private businesses and households now commanding an overwhelming 96.2% of total bank credit as financial institutions dramatically expand their support for economic activity.

Gross loans and advances surged by 39.4% year-on-year to GH¢124.3 billion at the end of June 2026, marking a stunning acceleration from the modest 5.5% growth recorded during the same period in 2025.

The sharp increase signals a major revival in bank lending, with the private sector emerging as the clear beneficiary of the credit expansion.

Private Sector Takes Centre Stage

According to the Bank of Ghana (BoG), credit extended to private enterprises and households increased by 39.6% to GH¢119.1 billion by the end of June 2026.

The growth represents a dramatic turnaround from the 9.2% expansion recorded a year earlier and highlights the growing appetite for financing among businesses and households.

With GH¢119.1 billion of total bank credit flowing to the private sector, its share of overall lending climbed from 95.1% in June 2025 to 96.2% in June 2026.

The figures underscore the increasingly important role commercial banks are playing in financing private economic activities, as businesses seek funds to expand operations, invest in productive assets and meet working capital needs.

For households, stronger credit growth could also provide greater access to financing for consumption, housing and other financial needs.

The scale of the increase places private sector borrowing at the heart of Ghana’s latest credit expansion.

Public Sector Credit Makes a Comeback

While private sector lending dominated the banking industry, credit to the public sector also showed signs of recovery.

Public sector credit increased by 5.6% to GH¢4.7 billion at the end of June 2026. This represents a sharp reversal from the 31.3% contraction recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

Despite the recovery, the public sector accounted for only 3.8% of total bank credit, down from 4.9% a year earlier.

The figures indicate that banks are directing an increasingly larger proportion of their lending portfolios towards private sector activities rather than government-related financing.

This shift could have important implications for economic growth, particularly if the additional credit is channelled into productive businesses capable of expanding output, creating jobs and increasing investment.

Services Sector Remains Credit King

The surge in lending was spread across several parts of the economy, although credit remained heavily concentrated in a handful of major sectors.

The services sector maintained its position as the largest recipient of industry credit, accounting for 36.6% of total lending at the end of June 2026.

Although its share was marginally lower than the corresponding period of 2025, the sector continued to dominate the distribution of bank credit.

The strong position of services reflects the sector’s broad economic footprint and the financing needs of businesses operating across various service-related activities.

Banks continue to view the sector as a major destination for lending, given its extensive role in economic activity and private sector operations.

Commerce and Finance Follow Closely

The commerce and finance sector emerged as the second-largest recipient of bank credit, accounting for 24.1% of total lending.

Its substantial share highlights the continued financing needs of businesses involved in trade, financial activities and related commercial operations.

Combined with the services sector, commerce and finance accounted for more than 60% of total industry lending.

The concentration demonstrates that while bank credit is expanding rapidly, a significant portion remains directed towards established sectors with strong financing demand.

Construction Gains Ground

One of the notable developments in the latest credit distribution was the increased importance of the construction sector.

Construction accounted for 10.7% of total bank credit at the end of June 2026, making it the third-largest recipient among the leading sectors.

The sector’s growing share could point to increased financing for infrastructure, property development, commercial projects and other construction-related activities.

With construction absorbing more than one-tenth of industry credit, its performance could become increasingly important to the broader economic impact of Ghana’s credit expansion.

Three Sectors Control 71.4% of Lending

Despite signs of modest diversification, bank lending remains significantly concentrated.

Services, commerce and finance, and construction collectively absorbed 71.4% of total industry lending at the end of June 2026.

This was slightly lower than the 72.3% recorded by the leading sectors a year earlier, suggesting that credit distribution is gradually becoming more diversified.

However, the three sectors still account for more than seven out of every ten cedis lent by banks across the industry.

The development presents both opportunities and risks.

A sustained increase in lending could provide businesses with the resources needed to expand production, invest and create employment. However, rapid credit growth also makes prudent lending standards and effective risk management critical for maintaining stability within the banking system.

Credit Boom Raises Growth Expectations

The dramatic rise in loans and advances represents one of the most significant developments in Ghana’s banking sector during the review period.

With overall credit growth accelerating from 5.5% to 39.4%, and private sector lending rising by 39.6%, banks have significantly increased their role in financing economic activity.

The dominance of private sector borrowers further indicates a clear shift in the direction of bank lending.

As businesses and households gain greater access to credit, the crucial question will be whether the funds translate into stronger production, investment and economic expansion.
