Amazon MGM Studios has released a striking new poster for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the upcoming action drama thriller written and directed by Bassam Tariq and starring two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. The film is scheduled to open in select theaters on September 25 before expanding more widely in October.

The poster, shared by the studio’s official account, depicts Ali as a solemn figure in a blue work shirt and dark skullcap, cradling a baby in a black carrier against his chest while gripping a long knife in his other hand. Large orange Arabic script frames him on either side against a deep green background.

The title appears in bold, distressed red lettering, with the tagline noting the limited September 25 rollout and broader October release. Credit lines confirm Tariq as writer and director, with distribution through Orion Pictures and Amazon MGM Studios.

The film follows Latif, a devoutly religious hitman living in Houston. After the death of his wife, he embarks on a desperate cross-city journey to protect his children. Along the way he confronts both external forces closing in on him and the internal beliefs that begin to unravel under pressure.

The story explores the tension between Latif’s violent profession, his faith, and his responsibilities as a father.

The title draws directly from a well-known Islamic hadith in which a man asks the Prophet Muhammad who among people is most deserving of his good treatment. The Prophet replies “your mother” three times before finally saying “your father.” The repeated emphasis on maternal honor informs the film’s emotional core and thematic concerns with family, duty, and moral conflict.

Tariq, whose previous feature Mogul Mowgli earned the Berlin Film Festival Critics Award, both wrote and directed the screenplay. He also serves as a producer alongside Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari of Two & Two Pictures. The project marks a significant creative reunion for Tariq and Ali. The pair had previously been attached to Marvel Studios’ long-delayed Blade reboot, with Ali set to star as the vampire hunter and Tariq initially hired to direct.

Tariq departed that production in 2022 amid scheduling shifts and creative differences. The Blade project has since undergone multiple changes and remains in development limbo. In recent interviews, Ali has stated that he has moved on from the Marvel film and views the current collaboration as creatively redeeming, noting that skills developed during Blade training informed his work here.

The supporting cast is stacked with notable talent. John Cho plays Kwan, a religious leader. Giancarlo Esposito, Tramell Tillman (Severance), Tiffany Boone, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Adia, and Jahleel Kamara also appear. Cinematography is handled by Katelin Arizmendi, known for her work on Succession and Dune.

Editing is by Cam McLauchlin, and the score comes from Son Lux, the composers behind the music for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film carries an R rating for language, violence and bloody images, and some sexual content. Runtime is listed at approximately 112 minutes.

Production was announced in February 2025. Additional cast members joined in the following months, and principal photography wrapped on May 29, 2025. Although the story is set in Houston-Tariq’s hometown filming took place primarily in Atlanta.

The movie is set to make its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before the theatrical rollout.

The platform release strategy begins with engagements in New York and Los Angeles on September 25, followed by expansions on October 2 and a wider release on October 9. Amazon MGM Studios is handling distribution under the Orion Pictures banner.

Early promotional materials, including a teaser trailer released in late June, intercut scenes of intense physical confrontation with quieter moments of familial care and religious reflection. A voiceover recounts the hadith that inspired the title, highlighting the film’s blend of genre action and spiritual inquiry. The trailer has generated significant online attention, with millions of views across platforms.

Public Reaction

Industry observers have noted the project’s unusual title and its deliberate engagement with faith as both a source of strength and potential conflict for its protagonist. For Ali, the role continues a career marked by nuanced portrayals of complex men navigating moral gray areas, from his Oscar-winning turns in Moonlight and Green Book to more recent work in Leave the World Behind and Jurassic World Rebirth.

Tariq has described the script as born from personal experience, including a near-tragedy that prompted deeper reflection on family and belief. The finished film represents the collaboration he and Ali had long hoped to achieve after the Blade experience.

As theaters prepare for the fall season, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother arrives as a distinctive entry: an R-rated action thriller that prioritizes character and cultural specificity alongside its genre set pieces.

The poster release serves as a clear signal that marketing efforts are intensifying ahead of the September limited opening. Audiences will soon have the chance to judge for themselves how successfully the film balances its twin commitments to visceral action and earnest spiritual inquiry.
