More than 35,000 fans filled the National Bowl for the UK debut of Diaspora Calling!, the music and arts festival founded and curated by Ms. Lauryn Hill.

The one-day event celebrated the culture, creativity, and shared histories of the African diaspora through a cross-generational lineup spanning hip-hop, neo-soul, reggae, Afrobeats, and UK rap, all hosted by comedian Dave Chappelle.

The festival, which Hill launched in Brooklyn in 2016, marked a landmark moment as her only confirmed UK performance of the year. Gates opened at noon for a film festival, art gallery, diaspora cuisine marketplace, and food village, with music starting at 4 p.m. and the event wrapping at 11 p.m.

Strictly 14 and over, the gathering drew a diverse crowd that turned the large outdoor amphitheater into a vibrant hub of cultural connection.

At the heart of the night was Hill’s reunion with fellow Fugees member Wyclef Jean. The pair marked the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1996 album The Score by revisiting classics including “Ready or Not,” “Fu-Gee-La,” and the title track. The performance also highlighted their solo catalogs: Wyclef delivered “911,” while Hill performed favorites such as “Ex-Factor,” “To Zion,” and “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

The latter featured a surprise appearance from Erykah Badu, who joined Hill onstage in one of the evening’s most memorable moments. With the exception of Pras Michel, it was the Fugees’ first performance together in the UK.

Hill’s sons added another layer of legacy. YG Marley performed his breakout hit “Praise Jah in the Moonlight,” while Zion Marley honored his grandfather Bob Marley with “Three Little Birds” before delivering his own track “Best of Me.” Both joined their mother and Wyclef during parts of the set, highlighting the generational thread that runs through the festival’s concept.

Erykah Badu delivered a standout set of her own, performing fan favorites including “On & On,” “Window Seat,” “Apple Tree,” and “Back in the Day.” UK rap pioneer Giggs brought heavyweight energy to the stage and was joined for a surprise collaboration by fellow British rapper Kano for performances of “P’s & Q’s” and “Rudeboy.” Nigerian Afrobeats star Fireboy DML showcased the global reach of contemporary African music with tracks that had the crowd moving, including a performance of “Peru.” Additional acts included Seun Kuti and The Compozers, along with DJ sets from DJ OBI and Michael Brun.

Throughout the evening, Dave Chappelle guided the program, introducing performers and weaving in his signature sharp social commentary and cultural observations. His presence aligned with the festival’s broader emphasis on dialogue and shared experience beyond pure performance.

Chappelle reportedly joked about the location, noting that many attendees seemed to confuse Milton Keynes with London.

The event attracted notable backstage and audience guests, including Gunna, Common, Rapsody, Tiwa Savage, Little Simz, Stonebwoy, Victony, Derek Chisora, Sabrina Elba, and others. The atmosphere blended high-energy performances with reflective cultural celebration.

Hill later reflected on the significance of the night, stating that Diaspora Calling! represented a long-held vision: “When we started, this was the mission from the beginning. Sometimes you get off the path a little bit, but you have to reclaim that and get back on it. That was a big deal for us. I grew up with heroes who did that for me.”

Originally conceived after Hill’s experiences performing in Ghana and building connections across diaspora communities with Wyclef Jean, the festival began as a curated art exhibition and live music program focused on Haitian art in Brooklyn.

It later expanded into tours featuring artists such as Nas, Kehlani, Noname, and Little Simz. The UK edition brought that ethos to one of Britain’s largest outdoor venues, complete with high-spec production, two stages in earlier planning, and an extensive food village highlighting diverse flavors.

Organizers and attendees described the day as more than a concert series. It served as a large-scale social and cultural gathering that connected generations through sound, stories, and shared heritage. From reggae-rooted conscious lyrics to Afrobeats rhythms and classic hip-hop anthems, the programming reflected the breadth of creative expression across the African diaspora.

Photos from the night captured the energy of the packed Bowl, with performers and crowds under the summer sky. The festival’s success as a UK debut reinforces its role as a platform for unity, resilience, and artistic exchange.

As Hill and her collaborators continue to develop the concept, the Milton Keynes edition stands as a powerful testament to the enduring influence of the music and the communities that sustain it.

Fans left the National Bowl with memories of rare reunions, surprise collaborations, and a night that lived up to its name-a true calling across the diaspora.
