The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) delivered a dramatic surge in market activity at the close of trading, with investors exchanging more than 4.5 million shares valued at GH¢29.51 million in a session that saw trading volume and turnover explode compared with the previous trading day.
The latest figures point to a sharp increase in investor participation and activity across listed equities, with total volume jumping by an impressive 291% while turnover surged by 563% compared with Monday, August 17.
The strong performance comes as the GSE continues to attract significant investor attention, with the benchmark Composite Index maintaining its position above the 15,000-point mark.
Trading Activity Explodes
A total of 4,551,663 shares changed hands during the session, representing a market value of GH¢29,511,450.06.
The figures marked a dramatic improvement from the previous trading session, highlighting the scale of the renewed activity on the local bourse.
The 291% increase in volume means investors traded nearly four times the number of shares recorded in the previous session. Even more striking was the 563% increase in turnover, reflecting a substantial rise in the value of transactions completed during the day.
In total, 28 listed equities participated in trading, with seven recording gains while five ended the session in negative territory.
The market therefore experienced a mixed performance at the individual stock level, even as overall trading activity surged.
MTN Ghana Commands Trading
Telecommunications giant MTN Ghana emerged as the undisputed leader in terms of trading volume.
The company recorded 3.91 million shares traded, accounting for the overwhelming majority of the total shares exchanged during the session.
Its trading activity was significantly ahead of the other actively traded stocks, underlining the strong investor interest surrounding the company.
CalBank followed with 245,231 shares traded, while Kasapreko recorded 86,130 shares. Intravenous Infusions also featured among the most actively traded stocks, with 60,036 shares changing hands.
The concentration of trading activity in MTN Ghana suggests that the stock remained a major driver of liquidity on the exchange during the session.
Intravenous Infusions Leads Gainers
While MTN Ghana dominated trading volume, Intravenous Infusions emerged as the strongest price performer.
The company gained 10%, closing at GH¢0.55 per share.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin followed closely, recording an impressive 8.99% increase in its share price. Hords also enjoyed strong investor demand, gaining 8.45%.
Digicut Production & Advertising completed the leading gainers after appreciating by 7.14%.
The broad gains among these equities helped inject positive momentum into the market, although the overall index movement remained relatively subdued.
Societe Generale Leads Decliners
Not every listed company enjoyed the buying pressure.
Societe Generale Ghana recorded the biggest decline among the losing stocks, falling 3.89% to close at GH¢5.19 per share.
Access Bank Ghana followed with a 1.71% decline, while Clydestone Ghana slipped 0.46%.
SIC Insurance Company also ended lower, declining by 0.18%.
The losses indicate that investors remained selective, with buying pressure concentrated in certain counters while others experienced selling pressure.
GSE Composite Index Holds Above 15,000
Despite the mixed performance among individual equities, the benchmark GSE Composite Index managed to close higher.
The GSE-CI gained 3.48 points, representing a marginal 0.02% increase, to close at 15,206.41 points.
Although the daily gain was modest, the index continues to reflect the extraordinary performance of Ghanaian equities over the course of the year.
The index currently records a one-week loss of 0.59%, while its four-week performance shows a gain of 0.84%.
More significantly, the GSE-CI has delivered a remarkable year-to-date gain of 73.39%.
That performance places the local equity market among the strongest-performing markets in the region and highlights the substantial gains recorded by investors in Ghanaian equities since the beginning of the year.
Financial Stocks Face Pressure
The financial sector, however, recorded a slightly weaker performance.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index declined by 0.02% to close at 8,025.08 points.
The index has recorded a one-week decline of 1.24% and a four-week loss of 2.63%.
Despite the recent weakness, the financial stocks index remains strongly positive for the year, recording a year-to-date gain of 72.69%.
The performance underscores the substantial recovery and appreciation experienced by financial-sector equities over the year.
Market Capitalisation Nears GH¢288 Billion
The surge in trading activity comes as the overall size of the Ghana Stock Exchange remains substantial.
The market capitalisation of the GSE currently stands at approximately GH¢287.7 billion, equivalent to about US$26 billion.
The latest trading figures reinforce the growing significance of the exchange as an avenue for investment and capital formation in Ghana.
With millions of shares changing hands and turnover rising sharply in a single session, investor activity remains a key factor to watch as the market progresses through the remainder of the year.
The combination of strong year-to-date index gains, rising trading activity and substantial market capitalisation could keep the Ghana Stock Exchange firmly in the spotlight as investors assess opportunities across the local equity market.
