COCOBOD Engages Global Trading Partners to Strengthen Cocoa Sector for 2026/27 Season

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Ransford Abbey, together with his Deputy in charge of Finance and Administration, Mr. Ato Boateng, convened a high level strategic engagement with leading international cocoa trading companies in London this week in a decisive stride towards cementing Ghana’s position as a global leader in cocoa production.

The Meeting hosted by the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Company (UK) Ltd. (GCMC UK), the brought together representatives from the world’s foremost trading and processing firms, reflecting the enduring commercial relationships that Ghana has cultivated over decades of cocoa trade.

The engagement was designed as a cornerstone in COCOBOD’s preparations for the 2026/2027 cocoa season, emphasizing transparency, sustainability, and strategic collaboration.

By taking the dialogue directly to international partners, Dr. Abbey and Mr. Boateng reinforced Ghana’s proactive approach in aligning domestic cocoa policies with global market expectations.

Attendees engaged in in-depth discussions on the recently enacted Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026 (Act 1182), which lays a robust legislative framework for sector reforms aimed at enhancing competitiveness and ensuring sustainability.

Central to the roundtable discussions was the presentation of COCOBOD’s proposed financing framework for the 2026/27 season, including innovative mechanisms such as a commercial paper and bond financing programme.

The proposed liquidity arrangements are intended to support Licensed Buying Companies (LBCs) while simultaneously inviting private-sector participation to bolster sectoral resilience.

The Importance of Finances in Boosting the Cocoa Sector

Mr. Boateng highlighted the critical importance of financial preparedness, ensuring that the new structure would provide sufficient operational flexibility and resilience for both producers and trading partners.

‘’We at COCOBOD look beyond fiscal and legislative considerations our focus is on Ghana’s readiness to meet the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), to demonstrate how the country’s commitment to producing cocoa that meets rigorous sustainability and traceability standards.’’

Dr. Abbey noted that ‘’Ghana Recognizes the Dual Imperative of Safeguarding the Environment and Maintaining Premium Market Access,’’ thus, positioning the cocoa sector to compete effectively while adhering to global ethical and environmental expectations.

The discussions allowed trading partners to provide insights on operational challenges and emerging market trends while fostering a shared understanding of strategies to optimize the commencement of the upcoming season.

Companies participating in the engagements emphasized the value of this transparent approach, noting that constructive exchanges enhance long term mutual trust and secure a predictable framework for trade.

Dr. Abbey reiterated COCOBOD’s commitment to open engagement and policy predictability.

“Our objective is to ensure that Ghana’s cocoa sector is better prepared, more resilient, and fully responsive to global market dynamics. Through collaboration, innovative financing, and legislative reform, we are laying the foundation for a sector that can sustainably meet international demand while supporting our farmers.”

Mr. Boateng added that sound financial management and strategic implementation of the new financing mechanisms will be essential to achieving operational efficiency and sectoral stability throughout the 2026/27 season.

Maintaining Ghana’s Status as the Origin for Premium Cocoa

The discussions underscored the integral role of stakeholder cooperation in maintaining Ghana’s status as a reliable origin for premium cocoa. While regulatory compliance and financial readiness were central topics.

The meeting exemplified the symbiotic relationship between Ghana and global cocoa markets, where mutual interests converge in the pursuit of sustainable development, market excellence, and long-term trade continuity.

The exchanges in London reinforced confidence in the readiness of Ghana’s cocoa sector to navigate the 2026/27 season with operational rigor, financial prudence, and a commitment to sustainability.

This vision places Ghana at the forefront of global cocoa production, not only as a reliable supplier of high quality beans but also as a model of governance, sustainability, and strategic industry partnerships.

The London engagement marks a critical milestone in ensuring that Ghana’s cocoa sector remains competitive, resilient, and responsive to the dynamic expectations of international markets.

Through these strategic discussions, Dr. Ransford Abbey and Mr. Ato Boateng affirm that Ghana’s cocoa industry is entering a new era in which collaboration, sustainability, and financial innovation drive both domestic growth and global recognition.

With the ongoing engagements, Cocoa Industry players look forward to a stabilized and competitive framework that secures the interests of farmers, traders, and the broader economy alike.
