Cedi Climbs to GH¢11.65 After GoldBod’s FX Intervention

Cedi Cuts 2026 Losses by More Than Half

The Ghanaian cedi has staged a marginal recovery against the US dollar, climbing to GH¢11.65 after the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) injected US$197 million into the foreign exchange market through commercial banks.

The latest movement offers a measure of relief for the local currency, which has faced renewed depreciation pressures in recent weeks amid rising demand for dollars and increased foreign exchange requirements for imports and energy-related payments.

The recovery marks the second consecutive week of gains on the interbank market, with market watchers estimating the appreciation at just under 1%. Although the improvement remains modest, it signals a potential shift in market conditions following a period of sustained pressure on the cedi.

GoldBod’s intervention has emerged as a key factor behind the latest recovery, raising expectations that improved dollar availability could help stabilise the exchange rate if the support continues.

GoldBod Injects $197 Million Into Banks

The latest boost came on Tuesday when GoldBod sold US$197 million to commercial banks at an exchange rate of GH¢11.70 to the dollar.

Following the transaction, the dollar’s value against the cedi declined to GH¢11.65, indicating a marginal appreciation of the local currency.

The intervention is significant because access to foreign exchange remains an important concern for businesses and financial institutions that depend on dollars to meet international payment obligations.

According to information available from market participants, every participating bank received the full amount it requested during the transaction. This helped ease immediate demand pressures and strengthened expectations that the cedi could record further gains if the improved supply of foreign exchange is maintained.

The development also highlights the influence that large-scale dollar injections can have on short-term exchange rate movements, particularly when demand from businesses and other market participants places pressure on available foreign currency.

However, the latest appreciation does not necessarily signal a lasting turnaround. The sustainability of the recovery will depend partly on whether dollar supply remains sufficient to meet demand across the market.

Why the Cedi Has Been Under Pressure

The cedi’s recent difficulties have been linked to rising demand for dollars by businesses preparing for increased import activity ahead of December.

Companies typically require foreign exchange to purchase goods, raw materials, machinery and other supplies from international markets. When demand for dollars rises faster than available supply, pressure builds on the local currency.

Energy-related payments have also contributed to the pressure.

The Bank of Ghana has been involved in foreign exchange payments for crude oil and finished petroleum products, adding to the demand for dollars within the economy.

These competing demands have placed the cedi under pressure since the third quarter, with the currency experiencing near-weekly depreciation from last month before the recent recovery.

The latest gains therefore arrive at a critical moment for businesses that need greater predictability in the foreign exchange market to manage their operating costs and financial obligations.

A more stable exchange rate could help importers plan their transactions with greater confidence, although the impact on prices will depend on several factors, including international commodity prices, transport costs and how quickly exchange rate movements are reflected in local markets.

GoldBod’s $1 Billion Plan Takes Centre Stage

The US$197 million sale forms part of GoldBod’s broader strategy to increase foreign exchange availability through its GoFX platform.

Under its revised arrangements for foreign exchange receipts from gold exports in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector, the institution plans to supply US$1 billion to commercial banks.

The strategy is intended to channel more dollars into the formal banking system, helping address foreign exchange shortages and improve liquidity for businesses and other market participants.

GoldBod’s intervention also complements measures by the Bank of Ghana to support liquidity in the foreign exchange market.

The scale of the planned US$1 billion supply means the programme could become an important source of foreign exchange over the coming period. Its effectiveness, however, will depend on the timing of the sales, the consistency of dollar availability and the level of demand from banks and their customers.

The latest transaction provides an indication of how the programme can influence market conditions when substantial amounts of foreign currency become available to participating institutions.

For businesses struggling to secure dollars at predictable rates, sustained support could ease some of the difficulties associated with international payments.

Can the Cedi Sustain Its Recovery?

Despite the latest appreciation, uncertainty remains over the cedi’s direction in the coming weeks.

Some commercial banks have indicated that they expect the currency to remain fairly stable if the improved liquidity support continues.

That expectation points to the importance of consistency. A one-off injection may ease immediate shortages, but maintaining exchange rate stability requires foreign exchange supply to keep pace with demand over time.

The approaching December period could also test the resilience of the recovery, particularly if businesses increase their import-related dollar purchases.

Market participants will therefore be watching GoldBod’s subsequent dollar sales, the Bank of Ghana’s liquidity management measures and the broader balance between foreign exchange inflows and outflows.

The cedi’s movement from GH¢11.70 to GH¢11.65 following GoldBod’s US$197 million transaction is an encouraging development, but the gain remains marginal.

Whether the improvement develops into a sustained recovery will depend on the availability of dollars beyond the latest intervention.

For now, GoldBod’s dollar supply has offered the cedi some breathing room. The bigger test will be whether the planned US$1 billion programme can provide enough consistent support to withstand renewed demand pressures and deliver greater stability in Ghana’s foreign exchange market.
