Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has utilized the 2026 Investing in African Mining Indaba to reaffirm the nation’s status as a premier destination for transparent and sustainable mineral investment.

Addressing global stakeholders at the Australian Mining in Africa reception, the Minister invited Australian firms to expand their footprint in Ghana’s “value-driven” extractive landscape, emphasizing that the country’s democratic stability serves as the bedrock for long-term commercial certainty.

“At the heart of Ghana’s success is stability and certainty. We view investors as long-term partners, not short-term profit-seekers. Our commitment is to a stable, transparent, and mutually beneficial partnership that advances sustainable mineral development.”

The charm offensive comes at a critical juncture as Ghana seeks to pivot from traditional extraction to a comprehensive mineral value chain involving lithium and green technologies.

By highlighting the country’s “long-standing reputation” as a mining powerhous formerly the Gold Coast Hon. Buah signaled that Ghana is moving beyond mere production to becoming a hub for geological exploration and mineral processing.

This strategic positioning is bolstered by a “predictable business environment” and a robust legal framework where mineral resources are held by the state in trust for the people, ensuring that investors are treated as “long-term partners” rather than transient entities.

In a bold move to stimulate “greenfield activity,” the Minister announced that the Ghanaian government has waived taxes on exploration, a policy designed to lower entry barriers for junior miners and explorers.

This fiscal adjustment addresses long-standing industry concerns regarding upfront costs, effectively placing Ghana in a more competitive position against regional rivals.

Australia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Tegan Brink, acknowledged the deepening ties, noting that Australian investment on the continent has already surpassed the US$40 billion mark, with Ghana remaining a focal point for these capital flows.

Diversification into Critical Minerals

Ghana is aggressively marketing its potential in “critical minerals,” specifically lithium, to tap into the global energy transition.

The Minister outlined significant opportunities for Australian collaboration in “green technologies” and advanced “mineral processing.”

By integrating Australian expertise in Mining Equipment, Technology, and Services (METS), Ghana aims to modernize its artisanal sectors and enhance the efficiency of its large-scale operations.

This transition is expected to create high-value jobs and move the country up the global supply chain, shifting the narrative from raw ore exportation to value-added industrialization.

The Minister’s high-level engagement at the Indaba is a calculated “global marketing buy” intended to secure the foreign direct investment (FDI) necessary for Ghana’s 2026 economic targets.

By positioning the country as a “stable, reliable, and forward-looking” jurisdiction, Ghana expects to see an uptick in “geological exploration” projects.

These partnerships will not only stabilize the cedi through increased forex inflows but also institutionalize “sustainable mining” practices that protect Ghana’s ecological assets while maximizing state revenue through a “robust constitutional framework.”
