Geopolitical Tension Risks Impacting ASM Gold Market – Analyst Warns

Mr. Alfred Appiah, a prominent Economist and Data Analyst, has warned that the intensifying geopolitical instability in the Middle East has emerged as a significant threat to Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector, raising fears of a severe economic shock.

According to Mr. Alfred Appiah, the conflict risks disrupting the primary export route for Ghanaian gold, which is heavily concentrated in Dubai, thereby threatening the nation’s vital foreign exchange inflows.

As global oil prices surge and logistics become increasingly precarious, the potential for air travel restrictions and shipping delays could leave the country’s gold trade paralyzed at a time when macroeconomic stability is most fragile.

“The Bank of Ghana needs the forex inflows to support market intervention. GoldBod needs the funds to continue purchasing from the market and cannot afford to build up a stockpile of gold that it’s unable to export to Dubai due to air travel restrictions.”

Dwelling  on these concerns, economists point out that the ASM sector remains the backbone of Ghana’s domestic gold production, yet its reliance on a single international hub creates a dangerous bottleneck.

With the Bank of Ghana (BoG) increasingly dependent on gold-backed forex to support market interventions and stabilize the Cedi, any prolonged disruption to the Dubai trade route would starve the central bank of essential liquidity.

Furthermore, the specialized agencies tasked with mopping up gold from local miners are facing a liquidity crisis of their own; if they cannot export their current holdings due to regional airspace closures, they risk a total capital freeze, making it impossible to continue purchasing from small-scale operators.

Supply Chain Fragility and the Dubai Dependency

The current crisis highlights a structural vulnerability in the extractive industry, where the “Dubai-bound” nature of artisanal gold creates a “high-stakes exposure for the national treasury.”

While the world watches oil benchmarks, the real danger for Ghana lies in the logistical “stranglehold” that a Middle Eastern war places on precious metal transit.

Because the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has been mandated to purchase significant quantities of gold from small-scale miners, the agency is now under immense pressure to maintain a “fluid export pipeline.”

A backlog of unexported bullion would not only tie up billions in seed capital but would also “effectively shut down the local buying market,” potentially forcing miners toward unofficial channels.

Macroeconomic Shocks and Central Bank Vulnerability

Beyond the immediate logistical hurdles, the broader mining industry faces a “dual-threat environment” where rising fuel costs are compounded by a looming forex scarcity.

The Bank of Ghana’s strategy to use gold as a “strategic anchor” for the Cedi relies entirely on the successful conversion of physical gold into liquid foreign currency.

Analyst warned that if the Middle East situation “drags on,” the resulting shock will be felt far beyond the mines, as the central bank loses its primary tool for “defending the local currency against depreciation.”

This convergence of geopolitical risk and domestic economic policy requires an urgent rethink of export diversification to prevent a “contagion of illiquidity” within the mining value chain.

The Case for Strategic State Intervention

To mitigate these risks, industry experts are calling for a more robust intervention by the government through GoldBod and the Ministry of Finance to ensure the sector remains “resilient against external volatility.”

Ensuring that the state has “adequate funding to bridge the gap” during periods of export disruption is critical to maintaining the integrity of the formal gold trade.

There is an increasing need to “expand refining capacity and explore alternative bullion markets” to reduce the absolute reliance on Middle Eastern hubs.

Without proactive measures to secure alternative travel routes and financial buffers, Ghana’s “gold-backed stability plan” could be derailed by events thousands of miles away, leaving the ASM sector in a state of terminal uncertainty.
