Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has officially launched the Heritage Village initiative by Goldbod Jewellery, a platform designed to promote locally crafted gold jewellery and strengthen Ghana’s value-added industrial agenda.

The initiative highlights Ghana’s renewed focus on transforming its gold resources into finished, high-value products rather than exporting raw materials. The launch event, held in Accra, brought together policymakers, industry players, artisans, and stakeholders within the creative and manufacturing sectors.

The Heritage Village initiative, led by Goldbod Jewellery Limited CEO Gertrude Emefa Donkor, aligns with Ghana’s broader policy direction of promoting industrialisation through value addition.

Ghana remains Africa’s leading gold producer, with the sector contributing significantly to national revenue and economic growth. However, policymakers have consistently raised concerns about the limited value retained from exporting raw gold.

The initiative, therefore, seeks to reposition Ghana’s gold industry by supporting the production of refined jewellery and finished products that can compete on the global market.

Government Pushes Industrial Transformation

The Vice President emphasised that Ghana’s economic future depends on its ability to build strong, resilient industries driven by innovation and creativity. She noted that initiatives such as Heritage Village play an important role in advancing government’s industrial transformation agenda.

Her remarks reflect ongoing national efforts to strengthen the gold value chain through institutions such as the Ghana Gold Board, which was established to regulate gold trade and promote value addition.

She commended the organisers for contributing meaningfully to national development by supporting local enterprise and creating opportunities for artisans. The initiative places a strong emphasis on empowering local artisans and strengthening Ghana’s creative economy.

By providing a platform for showcasing locally produced jewellery, Heritage Village supports skills development, entrepreneurship, and job creation within the sector.

The Vice President noted that Ghana’s artisans possess the creativity and craftsmanship needed to compete globally if given the right support and exposure. The initiative also aims to create a structured ecosystem where designers, fabricators, and marketers can collaborate to produce high-quality gold products.

Event Celebrates Culture and Innovation

The three-day event, timed to coincide with Ghana Month, positions gold not only as a natural resource but also as a symbol of national identity, heritage, and innovation.

The celebration reflects a broader effort to link culture, creativity, and economic development, while promoting Ghanaian identity through locally made products.

The launch of Heritage Village comes at a time when Ghana is actively working to strengthen its gold value chain. Government initiatives, including plans to develop a national gold hub, aim to position the country as a centre for gold jewellery production in Africa.

These efforts are designed to reduce gold smuggling, improve traceability, and ensure that more value is retained within the local economy. Experts note that building a strong downstream gold industry could significantly increase revenue, create jobs, and enhance Ghana’s global competitiveness.

Vice President Expresses Confidence in Initiative

The Vice President expressed confidence that the Heritage Village initiative will contribute to long-term economic transformation. She stated that Ghana’s growth will increasingly depend on its ability to innovate, create, and build industries that can withstand global economic shifts.

She further noted that initiatives like Heritage Village have the potential to inspire excellence, nurture talent, and position Ghana as a leader in gold-based manufacturing and design.

The launch of Heritage Village marks another step in Ghana’s efforts to build a more diversified and resilient economy. By promoting local production and value addition, the initiative aligns with national goals of reducing reliance on raw exports and increasing industrial output.

It also reinforces the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector players, and creatives in driving sustainable development.

As Ghana continues to reposition its gold industry, initiatives such as Heritage Village are expected to play a key role in shaping a future where natural resources are fully leveraged to create wealth, jobs, and global.
