Nations FC captain Razak Simpson has completed a five-year move to Finnish top-flight side Vaasan Palloseura (VPS), bringing an end to his time with the Ghanaian club following a memorable but turbulent campaign.
The commanding centre-back leaves Ghana after establishing himself as one of the country’s most consistent defenders, with his performances earning him recognition at both club and international level. Simpson’s move to Finland represents the next chapter of a career that has steadily risen over the past few seasons.
The transfer comes after Nations FC suffered relegation from the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League. Despite the disappointment of dropping into the Access Bank Division One League, Simpson ended his spell on a high by captaining the club to the MTN FA Cup title, securing the first major trophy in the club’s history.
His leadership proved decisive in the final as Nations FC edged Dreams FC on penalties to lift the prestigious domestic cup, a triumph that guaranteed the club a memorable finish to an otherwise difficult season.
Nations FC will represent Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup without their most trusted center back with Simpson now embarking on his first professional adventure outside Ghana after signing a long-term contract with VPS.
Reward for Years of Consistency
Simpson’s rise has been built on consistency and resilience. His impressive performances for Nations FC earned him a maiden Black Stars call-up in 2024 under then-head coach Otto Addo.
The defender made his senior international debut in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola in Luanda. Ghana secured a 1-1 draw in the encounter, with Simpson delivering a composed display that justified his selection and highlighted his readiness for international football.

Since then, he has remained one of the most reliable defenders in the Ghana Premier League, combining strong aerial ability, positional discipline and leadership qualities. As captain of Nations FC, he became the heartbeat of the team’s defence and a respected figure in the dressing room.
Although Nations FC could not avoid relegation, Simpson’s influence throughout the campaign remained unquestionable, culminating in the club’s historic FA Cup success.
A New Challenge in Finland
Simpson joins Vaasan Palloseura, commonly known as VPS, one of Finland’s historic football clubs based in the city of Vaasa. Founded in 1924, VPS competes in the Veikkausliiga, Finland’s top-tier football league, and has built a reputation for developing competitive squads capable of challenging the country’s established clubs.
The club has enjoyed a resurgence in recent seasons and continues to strengthen its squad with experienced and promising talent from both Finland and abroad. Simpson is expected to add defensive solidity, leadership and physical presence to the team as they pursue their ambitions in domestic competition.
The Ghanaian attracted interest from several clubs within the Ghana Premier League following Nations FC’s relegation. However, the opportunity to begin a European career proved too attractive to turn down, with the defender opting to continue his development in Finland.
The five-year contract also reflects VPS’s confidence in Simpson’s abilities and suggests the club views him as a long-term investment rather than a short-term addition.
Looking Ahead
For Nations FC, Simpson’s departure marks the end of an important era. As captain, he played a central role in some of the club’s biggest achievements, including their historic MTN FA Cup triumph. His exit leaves a significant leadership void as the club prepares for life in the Access Bank Division One League.
For the player, the move presents an opportunity to test himself in European football while keeping himself in contention for future Black Stars selections. Strong performances in Finland could strengthen his case for regular international involvement as Ghana prepares for upcoming major competitions.
With his blend of experience, leadership and defensive quality, Simpson will hope to make an immediate impact at VPS. After leaving Ghana as an FA Cup-winning captain, the defender now begins an exciting new chapter with ambitions of establishing himself in European football and continuing the progress that has made him one of Ghana’s standout defenders in recent years.
