Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, joins the passing out ceremony of the 506 Feed Ghana Brigadiers, who will serve as District Feed Ghana Coordinators nationwide.

A new corps of 506 highly trained agricultural officers has officially joined Ghana’s drive to transform its agriculture sector, following their graduation from a specialized training programme designed to strengthen discipline, accountability and service delivery under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme.

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, announced that the 506 Feed Ghana Brigadiers successfully completed an intensive training programme at the Ghana Police Training School before passing out earlier today.

According to the Minister, the Brigadiers are not ordinary agricultural extension officers. They are graduates with advanced qualifications in agriculture who have received additional paramilitary style training to prepare them for leadership, coordination and field operations across the country’s agricultural districts.

“This specialized training, distinct from traditional agricultural education, focused on instilling discipline, a strong sense of duty, resilience, teamwork, and respect for authority.”

Training Built for National Service

Hon. Opoku said the training was carefully designed to produce officers capable of leading agricultural transformation while maintaining high standards of professionalism and accountability. “The aim was to equip these officers with the essential qualities needed for effective field service and agricultural transformation,” he stated.

He added that combining technical agricultural expertise with discipline and a mission driven approach would prepare the Brigadiers to serve as ambassadors of production, hard work and national renewal.

Rather than serving only as technical advisors, the officers are expected to become frontline coordinators who will help drive government agricultural initiatives and ensure measurable improvements in farming communities.

The Minister stressed that the programme seeks to produce officers who can respond effectively to practical challenges while supporting farmers to increase productivity.

Bridging National Policy and Local Implementation

Under the Feed Ghana Programme, the Brigadiers will serve as District Feed Ghana Coordinators, becoming the direct link between national agricultural policies and implementation at the local level.

Their responsibilities will include coordinating agricultural activities, mobilising farmers and stakeholders, monitoring programme implementation and ensuring accountability throughout project execution.

Hon. Opoku noted that their presence across the districts will strengthen supervision and improve the delivery of government agricultural interventions. “They are tasked with coordinating activities, mobilizing stakeholders, monitoring progress, and ensuring the integrity of the programme’s execution,” he said.

The Minister explained that the officers would also work directly with farming communities to promote improved farming methods, solve production challenges and increase agricultural output.

Through regular engagement with farmers, the Brigadiers are expected to accelerate the adoption of modern farming practices while supporting government efforts to expand domestic food production.

Supporting Food Security and Economic Growth

The Feed Ghana Programme forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food security, reduce dependence on imported food and expand opportunities within the agricultural value chain.

According to Hon. Opoku, the initiative is intended to boost agribusiness, create employment, especially for young people, and contribute to long term national economic growth.

He said deploying trained officers across all districts would ensure that agricultural transformation reaches communities nationwide instead of being concentrated in a few locations.

The Minister believes the programme will also strengthen coordination among stakeholders while improving transparency and accountability in the implementation of agricultural projects.

Driving Agricultural Transformation

Hon. Opoku expressed confidence that the newly trained Brigadiers would make a significant contribution to Ghana’s agricultural sector by improving efficiency and strengthening programme delivery.

He said their combination of technical knowledge, discipline and leadership skills would enhance farming practices, improve productivity and reduce waste throughout the agricultural value chain.

“This, in turn, will contribute to improved food security by increasing domestic production and reducing waste,” he stated. The Minister added that expanding agribusiness and creating sustainable employment opportunities would help stimulate economic growth while supporting broader national development goals.

He described the strategic deployment of the Brigadiers as an important pillar of the government’s Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda. According to him, the officers will play a central role in ensuring that government agricultural programmes achieve measurable results and deliver lasting benefits to farming communities across the country.

With the graduation of the 506 Feed Ghana Brigadiers, the government expects a stronger and more coordinated implementation of agricultural policies aimed at improving productivity, enhancing food security and building a more self sufficient agricultural economy.
