The Ministry of Health has convened the second meeting of its 25-member Technical Working Group for the National Maternal Mortality Action and Response Program (MMARP), marking continued progress in the country’s effort to develop a coordinated national strategy for tackling preventable maternal deaths.
The Technical Working Group, drawn from a broad cross-section of health experts and stakeholders, has been mandated to develop the MMARP Roadmap covering the period 2026 to 2030, a document expected to guide the country’s maternal health interventions over the next four years.
According to the Ministry, the Group’s key deliverables include the definition of strategic pillars that will anchor the country’s maternal mortality reduction efforts, alongside the identification of priority interventions expected to have the greatest impact on reducing preventable deaths among pregnant women and new mothers.
Beyond outlining priorities, the Group has also been tasked with developing implementation frameworks to guide how the roadmap’s interventions will be rolled out in practice, as well as monitoring and evaluation systems that will allow the Ministry and its partners to track progress and measure impact over the life of the programme.
A sustainable financing strategy forms another critical component of the Group’s mandate, reflecting recognition that long-term impact on maternal health outcomes will depend heavily on consistent and reliable funding rather than short-term interventions.

The composition of the 25-member Technical Working Group suggests the Ministry is pursuing a deliberately broad-based approach to tackling maternal mortality, one that draws on expertise from across the health sector rather than relying on a single department or agency to design the roadmap in isolation.
