Investors on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended the latest trading session on a positive note as eight listed equities recorded price gains, helping push the benchmark market index higher despite a sharp decline in trading volume.
The session saw 1,817,665 shares change hands, representing a total market value of GH¢11.14 million. While trading volume dropped by 36% compared with the previous session on Monday, August 10, turnover jumped by an impressive 52%, signalling stronger value creation despite fewer shares being exchanged.
The latest performance adds to the growing momentum on the GSE, where the benchmark index has recorded substantial gains since the beginning of the year.
GSE Composite Index Climbs Further
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) advanced by 70.50 points, equivalent to a 0.46% increase, to close the session at 15,296.06 points.
The latest increase keeps the index firmly in positive territory for the year. The GSE-CI has recorded a remarkable 74.41% year-to-date gain, highlighting the strong performance of Ghanaian equities in 2026.
Over the past four weeks, the index has also gained 3.33%. However, investors have faced some short-term pressure, with the benchmark recording a 0.59% loss over the past week.
The figures demonstrate the contrasting movements in the market. While the index has experienced a modest pullback in the immediate term, its longer-term performance remains exceptionally strong.
Financial Stocks Also Push Higher
The positive sentiment was not limited to the broader market.
The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) rose by 0.65% to close at 8,125.58 points.
Despite this daily improvement, the financial stocks benchmark remains down 0.85% over the past week and 1.74% over the past four weeks.
Its year-to-date performance, however, remains impressive. The GSE-FSI has gained 74.85% since the beginning of the year, reflecting significant appreciation across financial sector counters.
The performance suggests that investors continue to maintain strong interest in Ghanaian equities, even as some stocks experience short-term corrections.
Eight Stocks Emerge as Big Winners
Eight listed equities recorded gains during the session, with some counters posting double-digit increases.
Digicut Production & Advertising emerged as the strongest performer, with its share price jumping 11.11% to close at GH¢0.10 per share.
Hords followed closely with a 10% increase, while Clydestone Ghana gained 9.82%.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin also recorded a strong performance, rising by 8.77% during the session.
The gains highlight the broad-based buying interest that supported the market’s positive close.
For investors watching smaller and mid-sized counters, the performance of these stocks could attract renewed attention, particularly if buying interest continues in subsequent sessions.
Intravenous Infusions Suffers Sharpest Fall
While several stocks recorded impressive gains, three equities ended the session in negative territory.
Intravenous Infusions emerged as the biggest decliner, with its share price falling by 8.33% to close at GH¢0.44.
Benso Oil Palm Plantation followed with a 2.49% decline, while Kasapreko recorded a marginal 0.5% loss.
The mixed performance demonstrates the stock-specific nature of current trading activity on the exchange, with investors aggressively buying some counters while reducing exposure to others.
MTN Ghana Dominates Trading Activity
MTN Ghana once again emerged as the most actively traded stock by volume.
The telecommunications giant recorded 976,154 shares traded during the session, accounting for more than half of the total shares exchanged on the GSE.
Intravenous Infusions followed with 254,788 shares, while Kasapreko recorded 211,600 shares.
Ecobank Transnational also featured prominently, with 94,426 shares changing hands.
The heavy activity in MTN Ghana demonstrates the continued importance of the telecommunications giant to overall market liquidity.
Turnover Surges Despite Lower Volume
One of the most striking features of the session was the divergence between trading volume and turnover.
Although the number of shares traded fell by 36% compared with Monday’s session, the total value of transactions increased by 52% to GH¢11.14 million.
This suggests that relatively higher-value transactions played a major role in driving market turnover.
For investors and market watchers, the development could point to stronger activity in selected counters despite lower overall share volumes.
GSE Market Capitalisation Reaches GH¢289 Billion
The Ghana Stock Exchange currently has a market capitalisation of approximately GH¢289 billion, equivalent to about US$24.6 billion.
The sizeable market value reflects the growing importance of listed companies to Ghana’s financial markets.
With the GSE Composite Index up more than 74% year-to-date, investors who entered the market earlier in the year have seen substantial gains across several counters.
However, the recent weekly decline in the benchmark index also shows that volatility remains a factor.
Investors Watch for More Gains
The latest session has provided another boost for investors as the GSE continues to post strong year-to-date returns.
With eight gainers against three losers, market breadth favoured buyers, while the rise in both the Composite Index and Financial Stocks Index reinforced the positive tone.
The combination of strong year-to-date gains, increased turnover and a GH¢289 billion market capitalisation places the GSE firmly in the spotlight.
Investors will now be watching closely to determine whether the latest upward movement can be sustained in the coming sessions, particularly as individual stocks continue to experience significant price swings.
Currently, the market remains one of the stronger-performing segments of Ghana’s financial system, with investors continuing to search for opportunities as the GSE delivers another session of gains.
