John Legend is entering a fresh creative chapter. The EGOT-winning singer, songwriter and pianist announced Tuesday that his next studio album, Muse, will arrive October 23 via Republic Records.

The 16-track project is produced entirely by Pharrell Williams, with the two co-writing the material. Lead single “Daylight” is available now.

Legend described the album as a deliberate departure from the piano-driven ballads that have defined much of his commercial success. “I think my repertoire has always been very diverse, but the piano-driven ballads have gotten the most traction throughout my career,” he said. “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.” Muse is positioned as a cinematic, lush body of work that draws from a wide spectrum of Black music traditions, including gospel, standards, doo-wop, classic soul, Afrobeat and hip-hop.

The collaboration grew out of an earlier partnership. Legend contributed vocals to “The Birds Don’t Sing” on Clipse’s 2025 album Let God Sort ’Em Out, which Pharrell also produced. That experience sparked the full-length project. “When Pharrell called me, I thought, let’s do this,” Legend recalled. “A lot of people would have imagined we’d done something like this already, but we hadn’t. It felt past due.” Recording sessions began in January 2025 at Pharrell’s studio inside Louis Vuitton headquarters in Paris, where the producer also serves as men’s creative director.

Pharrell’s vision centered on a sophisticated, cinematic sound.

“Pharrell’s idea from the beginning was that we would create something with all of these classic, cinematic elements, this Black James Bond aesthetic, but with a modern backbeat at its foundation. You can hear traces of me and traces of him, but it sounds like something new for the both of us. The combination of me and Pharrell, on paper, I think, is a good idea. And the execution is even better”

Pharrell appears as a featured artist on multiple tracks, including the title song, “Her,” “Get Back,” “Are You Ok?,” “Next Time” and “Fireflies.” Clipse guest on “Bodies On The Floor.”

“Daylight,” the first official single, finds Legend offering reassurance to a lover over a groove rich with booming percussion, orchestral strings and ambient Gregorian chants. “I’ll be here in the morning,” he sings. The track features additional songwriting from Samm Henshaw and Wayne Hector, with arrangement contributions from Terrace Martin and Larry Gold.

Legend previewed the song during a performance on CBS’s America’s Tailgate in Nashville the night before its release. Another album cut, “Pray For Ya,” previously debuted as part of the soundtrack for Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 men’s show in January.

The Tracklist

The full tracklist is: “Muse” (feat. Pharrell Williams), “Pray For Ya,” “Her Introduction,” “Her” (feat. Pharrell Williams), “Daylight,” “Get Back” (feat. Pharrell Williams), “Are You Ok?” (feat. Pharrell Williams), “Under The Bridge Introduction,” “Under The Bridge,” “Next Time” (feat. Pharrell Williams), “Bodies On The Floor – Taps Introduction,” “Bodies On The Floor” (feat. Clipse), “Doing Me,” “Fireflies” (feat. Pharrell Williams), “Everything” and “Sail Off.”

Muse follows Legend’s 2024 children’s album My Favorite Dream, a family-oriented project produced by Sufjan Stevens that included the song “L-O-V-E” featuring his wife Chrissy Teigen and their children. Before that came the 2022 double album Legend, which marked his fifth consecutive top-10 entry on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart.

Across two decades, Legend has built a career that bridges classic soul songcraft with contemporary R&B and pop success, earning him Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

The new project arrives at a moment when both artists continue to expand their creative footprints. Pharrell has maintained a high-profile presence in music and fashion, while Legend remains active as a performer, coach on The Voice and advocate.

Fans can pre-order and pre-save Muse now. “Daylight” is streaming on major platforms, giving listeners an early taste of the partnership’s polished, groove-driven sound.

With its emphasis on lush production, stylistic range and a clear intent to surprise, Muse positions Legend for a new phase. The full album arrives in just over six weeks, offering a complete picture of what the long-awaited collaboration between two distinctive musical voices has yielded.
